[Juhua Decoction]
Chrysanthemi Flos (Monarch herb) Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Minister herb) Alumen (Assistant herb, used raw) Decoct these three herbs into a liquid, soak real green silk in it, and apply to the eyes by wiping.
If the corneal opacity (cloudy film) begins to recede from its root, one must wait until the divine light of the eye (visual acuity/spirit) radiates outward before the opacity fully subsides; if prolonged closure of the eyes causes the divine light to retreat inward, it must be guided to emerge again. It is suitable to use the following prescription:
Valerianae Flos (Gujingcao) (Monarch herb) Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma (Monarch herb) Lycii Fructus (Minister herb) Cassiae Semen (Zuojinming) (Adjuvant herb) Heishen (Minister herb) Chrysanthemi Flos (Minister herb) Bombyx Batryticatus (Assistant herb) Equiseti Herba (Assistant herb) Decoct them together with river water into a liquid, seal tightly in a porcelain jar, and simmer over water until viscous. Add fine gold ink powder and alumen powder, mix evenly, dry in the sun, then add a small amount of Guangjiao (glue made from donkey hide) to form lozenges. Grind with human milk and instill into the eyes, three to four times a day, or five to seven times. Approximately one lozenge of ink matches one fen of raw alumen, both used raw.
When the intraocular opacity recedes, accompanied by heat sensation and increased ocular discharge, an external guiding method is suitable.
Raw Alumen (3 fen) Pear (one fruit, peeled and pitted)
First grind the alumen into a fine powder, place it within slices of pear, and grind them together. Filter through silk to obtain the juice, add a little pure honey, mix evenly, seal tightly, and boil over water. After cooling, sweep (apply) to the inside and outside of the eyelids, five to seven times daily.
The original prescription ends here. Whether it can be applied with spiritual clarity depends on the practitioner. Those with high medical skill may adapt and utilize it effectively. One should not be rigidly attached to the text, nor should one act arrogantly or presumptuously. To use this method, one must first avoid strangers, refrain from speaking, cut off desires, maintain a bland diet, close the eyes, and rest quietly, so that success may be achieved. Otherwise, after opening the orifices, evil fire will be stirred up and surge upward, obstructing the hollow and spiritual orifices of the eye; this is seeking brightness but resulting in darkness. Be cautious!
(Ma Hualong’s Commentary)
For treating elderly eye conditions, tonifying medicines are generally suitable. Why does this prescription begin without tonics but instead uses orifice-opening and guiding agents?
In chronic eye diseases, evil heat, phlegm-fluids, and blood stasis stagnate in the Liver and Lung meridians, gradually blocking the clear orifices. The meridians become congested, and Qi and Blood cannot ascend, descend, circulate, and flow to nourish the eyes, thereby generating various pathologies. First, use orifice-opening drugs to unblock and facilitate the pathways, removing obstructions. Restore deficiency to its proper state, and restore agility to its agile function. Once tonifying agents are administered, they can directly enter the Kidney meridian and assist in emitting brightness. Therefore, opening the orifices takes precedence; only when the orifices are patent can tonifying and circulating agents enter. If the orifices are not opened, hastily using tonifying drugs will instead aid the ascent of evil fire, worsening the condition.
Generally speaking, the orifice-opening guide and the Zhenren Chuichong method differ in approach but converge in result. Cases where tonification fails are often due to unopened orifices! If there is no external corneal opacity or red vascular filaments, and no internal obstruction by evil qi, but only blurred vision, it is a pure deficiency syndrome. In such cases, the spiritual orifices are unobstructed; taking Rehmanniae Radix, Lycii Fructus, Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, etc., allows direct entry into the Kidney meridian, transforming darkness into brightness, without the need for orifice-opening drugs.
