When red filaments resembling threads penetrate the Bai Zhu (White of the Eye, sclera) from the inner canthi of both eyes, it indicates that Heart Fire is overcoming Lung Metal. One should use Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos) to drain Heart Fire, so that Lung Metal naturally regains its balance.
If the Bai Zhu becomes red and congested, invading the Hei Jing (Black Pupil, cornea), it indicates that Lung Metal is overcoming Liver Wood. One should use Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) to drain Lung Fire, so that Liver Wood naturally regains its balance.
If the Hei Jing protrudes with distending pain, and the upper and lower eyelids are swollen and red, making them difficult to open, it indicates that Liver Wood is overcoming Spleen Earth. One should use Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) to drain Liver Fire, so that Spleen Earth naturally regains its balance.
If the upper and lower eyelids are swollen, and the Hei Jing sinks inward, making it difficult to open, it indicates that Spleen Earth is overcoming Kidney Water. One should use Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to drain Spleen Earth heat, so that Kidney Water naturally regains its balance.
For all three conditions, one should first apply Bai Yu Ding (White Jade Pellet), followed by Yuan Ling Dan (Primordial Spirit Pill). Some say to apply Zhi Bao Dan (Precious Treasure Pill) (formula seen in Volume 3).
The Wu Lun (Five Wheels) correspond to Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. Mutual generation implies no disease; mutual overcoming implies disease.
What is meant by mutual generation? For instance, the Lung belongs to Metal and is called the Qi Wheel; the Kidney belongs to Water and is called the Water Wheel; the Liver belongs to Wood and is called the Wind Wheel; the Heart belongs to Fire and is called the Blood Wheel; the Spleen belongs to Earth and is called the Flesh Wheel. Metal generates Water; Water generates Wood; Wood generates Fire; Fire generates Earth; Earth generates Metal; Metal again generates Water. This cycle continues endlessly, so how could disease arise?
What is meant by mutual overcoming? If the Five Viscera are imbalanced, stagnation transforms into Heart Fire, which overcomes Lung Metal; Lung Metal then overcomes Liver Wood; Liver Wood overcomes Spleen Earth; Spleen Earth overcomes Kidney Water; Kidney Water overcomes Heart Fire; and Heart Fire again overcomes Lung Metal. If this cycle of overcoming continues without end, myriad diseases will arise.
Treatment methods must clarify the principles of generation and overcoming; thus, the medicine will naturally succeed. Therefore, the Wu Lun (Five Wheels) and Ba Kuo (Eight Passes) each belong to a specific meridian. When treating disease, one must first detail the root cause, and then modify prescriptions according to symptoms.
Regarding the distribution of the Wu Lun: The Bai Jing (White of the Eye) belongs to the Lung. Whenever red filaments appear on the Bai Jing, it is because Heart Fire overcomes Lung Metal, causing accumulated heat in the Lung Meridian to have nowhere to dissipate. Following the Lung's meridians, it ascends into the eyes, resulting in red filaments that knot upon the Bai Jing. After two years, a layer of white fatty membrane grows, covering the red filaments; outside this membrane, another layer of red filaments grows. Such layering leads to established disease.
When red filaments first appear, it is appropriate to promote urination, allowing Heart Fire to exit via the urine, as the Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior partners. Once the pathogenic fire is removed, the Lung will not be invaded. If the disease remains confined to the Lung Meridian and has not entered the Liver Meridian, intermittent use of cold-cooling herbs is permissible, since the Hei Jing (cornea) has not yet developed Yun Yi (cloudy opacity); one may apply Sao Wu Zhou and Zhi Bao Zhou, using the "Blowing and Rushing Method" from the *Mi Jue* (Secret Manual).
