Mr. Xuanyan (Huangfu Mi) stated: Zhang Zhongjing expanded upon the decoction therapies of Yi Yin, applying them widely with verified efficacy. Cheng Wuji, in his *Commentary on the Treatise on Cold Damage*, posited that since ancient times, various prescriptions have become difficult to verify in detail due to the passage of years; only the works of Zhang Zhongjing can be regarded as the ancestral source of all formulas. In essence, Zhang Zhongjing inherited the methods of Yi Yin, who in turn inherited the classics of Shennong. The Yellow Emperor, Qibo, and the *Ling Shu* and *Su Wen* were authored by great sages. Regarding the principles of prescription formulation, it is stated: One sovereign herb and two minister herbs constitute a small formula; two sovereign herbs and four minister herbs constitute a large formula. In the classics, formulas such as Milian Zhu Ze Decoction (Milian, Atractylodes, and Alisma Decoction), Wuhui Fish Powder, Banxia Decoction, and Ji Shi Li (Chicken Dropping Fermented Liquid) contain no more than three or four ingredients. Even later, Xu Yizong remarked that ancient physicians used medicines sparingly and precisely. Therefore, the formulas of Zhang Zhongjing contain very few medicinal materials. Later, Li Dongguan's formulas contained up to thirty or more ingredients. Critics noted that Li Dongguan was like Han Xin leading troops—more is better—but when others imitated him, they inevitably invited criticism for "spreading wide over the fields" (lacking focus). In this compilation, I first present two formulas from the *Su Wen* and *Ling Shu*, followed by one formula of Yi Yin's Decoctions as the master model, and then comprehensively take Zhang Zhongjing's formulas as the ancestral root. Formulas from the *Official Formulary*, such Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Powder), Si Wu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction), and Si Jun Zi Tang (Four-Gentlemen Decoction), are attached according to category. As for Li Dongguan's Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment Qi Decoction) and Zhu Danxi's Yueju Wan (Free Wander Pill), they indeed developed ideas not previously explored by predecessors; although one might say I am creating ancient traditions anew, they are valid. Modern medical books such as Dai Yuanli's *Zhengzhi Yaojue* (Essentials of Diagnosis and Treatment) and Xue Xinfu's *Mingyi Zazhuo* (Miscellaneous Notes of Famous Physicians) are concise and do not deviate significantly from the intent of Zhang Zhongjing, so they are largely adopted. In summary, "formula" implies imitation/modeling, and "medicine" implies mental discernment. From Zhang Zhongjing, we trace back to Yi Yin.
