[Wangsun]
Taste is bitter, nature is neutral. It governs evil qi of the five zang organs. Cold-dampness bi syndrome. Pain and soreness of the four limbs. Cold pain in the knees. Grows in river valleys.
Ingesting it prolongs life. It is abundant on Mount Zhongnan. The name sounds like "Ting Duo Sun," a corruption derived from "Liang Mu." Its shape resembles the Purple River Cart (Placenta Hominis), leaves resemble the dry lotus root. Closes at night and opens at dusk; names are the same but are the substances identical?
The *Book of Tang* records that Jiang Fu said there is dry lotus root on Mount Zhongnan, which prolongs life when ingested. Gan Shoucheng said this is Mumeng. (An alias for Wangsun). The name was changed to deify it.
The *Classic of Poetry* says: "What is in Zhongnan?" Wu Pu said: In Chu it is called Wangsun, in Qi it is called Changsun. Also named Haishun. Famous physicians said: Another name is Huangsun. *Yilin* says: "Receiving blessings, many sons." *Classic of Poetry* says: "Driving together with two males." Li Shizhen said: The Mumeng used in ancient prescriptions is Zican (Bupleurum root). The Mumeng used by later generations is actually Wangsun. Leaves grow at the apex, resembling the leaves of Placenta Hominis. *Mencius* says: "Rubbing the head to the heels." *I Ching* says: "Peeling the bed to the skin." Li Shizhen said: Another name is Huanghun and Yehe; names are the same but substances differ.
[Shuyangquan]
Taste is bitter, nature is slightly cold. It governs alopecia. Heat from malignant sores. Scabies, itching, scabs, tinea. Worm-induced dental caries. Grows in river valleys.
In the fertile Western Shu, it sprouts in yin and damp places. Swelling caused by earthworm breath, bees attaching to hard stems. Small areas resembling mouse tracks, smooth surfaces mistaken for crow's eyes. Efficacy collects treatment for lacquer bites, applicable for both application and bathing.
Lu Sidao's poem: "Western Shu is called the Land of Abundance, renowned for its fertility since ancient times." Su Gong said: Commonly known as Qigu, growing in yin and damp places. Yan Yanzhi's poem: "Gracefully soaking into sprouting." Zhai Yuanfang said: For areas affected by earthworm breath, crush and mix with Minium (Red Lead) for treatment. Li Shizhen said: Yellow bees build nests using Qigu grass as the base. Chen Cangqi said: Qigu leaves are fine, often growing by rocks. Su Gong said: Crushed and applied to treat lacquer dermatitis. Yangquan is a large herb, Qigu grass is the size of a mouse track, growing between steps, merely sharing the same name. Su Song said: Some say this is Crow's Eye Grass. Li Shizhen believed this is Solanum nigrum (Longkui). Nature is slippery like okra. Su Gong misidentified it. Those with ears suffering from lacquer dermatitis should boil a decoction for bathing.
[Jiaochuang]
Taste is slightly salty, nature is cold. It governs lumbar and spinal pain. Inability to lie on the bed. Difficulty in bending forward and backward. Clears heat and can be used as a bathing decoction. Grows in river valleys, fields, and wilderness.
Mistaken for Xiangsu. Rubbing yields inferior odor. Flat marshes and mature fields. Square stems with opposite nodes. Vertical and horizontal spine hardness. Extending the waist causing fracture. Straightening and soothing. Bathing the body to stop heat.
Li Shizhen said: Abundant in wilderness. Square stems with opposite nodes. Large leaves resembling Xiangsu. Rubbing does not yield fragrance. Liu Yin's poem: "Passing through dangerous passes via firm spines." *I Ching* says: "Pull and extend." *Book of Jin* records Tao Qian saying: "How could I bow my waist for five pecks of rice?" Wu Pu said: Another name is Juema. *Bielu* says: Another name is Xiangsu. Yan Yanzhi's ode: "Resembling hemp, capable of straightening." Li Shizhen said: Because Su nature is comfortable and free, it is called Su. *Book of Rites* says: "The scholar purifies his body and bathes in virtue."
