[Apis Cerana Nest]
Bitter, neutral in nature. Primarily treats convulsions and spasms due to fright and epilepsy (Jing Xian Chou Ru), pathogenic cold-heat factors (Han Re Xie Qi), and toxins from ghostly influences, essence spirits, and gu poison (Gui Zhu Jing Mei Gu Du). It is best used after being roasted over fire. Also known as Feng Chang (Bee Intestine). Grows in mountain valleys.
(Praise) It harbors toxins and essence, hanging upside down to consolidate defense. Like a tower one inch high, with four open doors. Curving obliquely like a crescent moon, embracing fragrance and storing it separately. Too small to even contain a sparrow's egg; deities entrust their support here.
Records in the *Book of Wei*: Guan Lu played the game of She Fu (guessing hidden objects) and guessed that an item at home was "a household hanging upside down, harboring essence and breeding toxins," referring to the bee nest. The *Zuo Zhuan* states: "Merely using this to consolidate our borders." From Yuan Haowen's *She Bi*.
The bee nest is like a tower one inch high. Liu Shen wrote in his fu: "Thousands of doors and households, opening towards all sides." He also wrote: "Obliquely curving like a crescent moon." Wen Tingyun's poem says: "Bees return carrying heavy fragrance." The *Huainanzi* states: "A bee nest cannot contain a sparrow's egg." The *Han Shi Wai Zhuan* states: "Bees on millet stalks do not sting; rats in shrine earth are not smoked out, not because these bees and rats possess divine power, but because of the environment they rely upon." Thus, sages seek worthy talents to assist themselves.
[Turtle Shell]
Salty, neutral in nature. Primarily treats zheng jia (masses and accumulations) in the heart and abdomen, hard accumulations, alternating cold and heat. Removes痞 (痞块 - palpable masses), polyps, genital erosion, hemorrhoids, and malignant flesh. Grows in ponds and marshes.
(Praise) Fluids float on the surface, the dorsal ridge arches high. Attracted by various odors. Knowing that nine-ribbed turtles are rare, wishing for one with double-layered skirt-like edges. Its form returns to wet amaranth; burning smoke drives away mosquitoes. Fish fly while spirits guard; donning armor establishes merit.
The *Pi Ya* records: Wherever turtles are, foam floats on the water, called Bie Jin (Turtle Fluid). The *Erya Yi* records: Round shape with an arched dorsal ridge. Pi Rixiu records: Many small fuzzy things, like turtles attracted by odor. The *Zhi Yan* records: Turtle shells from the Yuan River, those with nine ribs are rare. The *Wudai Shi Bu* records: Monk Qian Guang said, "I only wish to obtain a turtle with two layers of skirt." The *Tang Lei Han* records: Placing turtle shell in a damp place and irrigating it with red amaranth juice causes it to dissolve. Li Shizhen states: Burning turtle shell produces smoke that repels mosquitoes, causing the shell to dissolve. The *Pi Ya* further states: When there are 360 fish, dragons lead them out of the water; turtles remain, so fish do not leave. Hence, the turtle is also called Shen Shou (Divine Guardian). Zhong Hui's writing says: "Donning armor and sharpening weapons." Pan Yue's writing says: "Commemorating virtue and recording merit."
[Crab]
Salty, cold in nature. Primarily treats pathogenic factors in the chest, painful heat accumulation, facial deviation (Pian Ze), and facial swelling. Burned lacquer can be used to treat mouse infestations. Grows in ponds and marshes.
(Praise) Gathering waves shaking the river, autumn wind suddenly rises. Erecting twin claws as guards, moving sideways with eight legs kneeling. Moon gestates golden paste, frost intoxicates red marrow. Medicine cup divides fragrance, avoiding wind and persimmons.
The *Xie Pu* records: People in Jiyun hold torches gathering by the water at night, called Crab Lang (Crab Wave). Two boats face each other by the river side, lowering nets and moving slowly, called Yao Jiang (Shaking River). Jiang Yan's fu says: "Suddenly the autumn wind rises." Shen Yue's song says: "Eight spirits stand guard." The *Erya Yi* records: Eight legs folded with faces looking down, called Gui (Kneeling). Twin claws held high with faces looking up, called Ao (Claws). Huang Luzhi's poem says: "Angry eyes move sideways, competing with tigers." Luo氏 states: The crab's abdomen reflects the waxing and waning of the moon. Xu Ling's inscription says: "Golden paste not yet melted." Huang Tingjian's poem says: "Imagine chewing the frosty navel." The *Long Hu Jing* states: "Red marrow flows into mercury." Lu Guimeng's poem says: "The medicine cup should block the fragrance of crab claws." Li Shizhen states: Eating crabs with persimmons induces wind disorders.
