Indicated for malignant sores, eroding (as recorded in *Taiping Yulan*, "removing") erosions of the yin and five types of hemorrhoids (the text in *Taiping Yulan* includes "bleeding from the large anus" after "five types of hemorrhoids." The original text in *Daguan Bencao* has the character "black" here).
*Mingyi Bie Lu* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) states: Grows in the East Sea, with patterns on its surface; can be harvested at any time.
Li Fish (*Liyu*) (cited as "Li Fish" in *Chuxue Ji*) is bitter in taste and cold in nature. It treats damp-bi syndrome, edema of the face and eyes, and promotes the downward discharge of water-dampness. Also known as [missing character] fish. Grows in ponds.
Commentary: *Shuowen Jiezi* states: "[Character KT], is a type of fish; [Character], is [Character KT]." Pronounced like "ku long." *Guangya* states: "Li, is Li [missing character]." *Erya* states: "Li." Guo Pu annotates it as "[Character]." *Mao Shi* states: "Fang Li." The *Zhuan* commentary states: "Li, is [Character]." According to *Shuowen Jiezi*, "Li" refers to a specific fish, which differs from "[Character KT]." However, Mao Chang and Guo Pu use "Diao" to explain "Li," which contradicts Xu Shen's explanation. Nevertheless, *Chuxue Ji* also cites this as "Li," likely due to homophonic errors causing confusion, making detailed verification difficult. *Guangya* also writes it as "Li," with occasional variations. Additionally, *Guang Zhi* states: "Tun fish, also known as [Character] (*Bencao Yan Yi* states: Li fish, now called black carp by people; Daoists believe stars on its head are used for apotropaic purposes.) Based on these various accounts, if written as 'Li' (Carp), what *Shuowen Jiezi* describes as [Character], *Guang Zhi* considers river porpoise, and *Bencao Yan Yi* considers black carp; if written as 'Li' (another variant), *Shuowen Jiezi* considers it [Character], *Guangya* considers it moray eel, and Lu Ji considers it abalone. The explanations differ significantly and are hard to investigate in detail.
Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Treats red-hot pain in the eyes and blindness (Qingmang), brightens the vision. Long-term consumption makes the body strong and vigorous, benefiting willpower and qi-energy. Grows in ponds and marshes.
*Mingyi Bie Lu* states: Grows in Jiujiang; can be harvested at any time.
Commentary: *Shuowen Jiezi* states: "Li, is [Character]; [Character], is Li." *Erya* states: "Li [missing character]." She Ren states: "Li, also known as [Character]." Guo Pu annotates "Li" saying: "Currently, red carp." Annotating "[Character]" saying: "Large fish resembling sturgeon." *Mao Shi* states: "[Character] Tun fafa." The *Zhuan* commentary states: "[Character], is Li." From this, we know Guo Pu separated them into two distinct entities, which is incorrect. *Gujin Zhu* states: "People in Yanzhou call red carp Chi Ji (Red Steed), green carp Qing Ma (Green Horse), black carp Yuan Ju (Black Colt), white carp Bai Qi (White Pegasus), and yellow carp Huang Zhi (Yellow Pheasant)."
Above belong to insects and fish categories. Top-grade medicines total ten species, consistent with older editions.
