Regarding all traumatic injuries and falls: for men, upper body injuries are easier to treat while lower body injuries are difficult to cure, because Qi ascends. For women, lower body injuries are easier to treat while upper body injuries are difficult, because Blood descends. In any injury, one must verify the location, press to determine depth, and clarify whether the toxin/injury is recent or old. Men's Qi moves from left to right and belongs to Yang; Women's Blood moves from right to left and belongs to Yin. It is most crucial to distinguish between Qi and Blood. Injuries to the anterior chest/body lead to rapid death; injuries to the back and shoulders lead to slower death. Injuries to the left side cause shortness of breath, yellowish complexion, and edema; injuries to the right side cause shortness of breath and a blood-deficient complexion. Signs of fatal prognosis include: excessive phlegm, white eyes (fixed pupils), hanging lips, loss of neck support (severe cervical injury), fecal incontinence, foul breath, squinting/diplopia, noisy breathing, wheezing with elevated chest, red and urgent ears/nose, and inability to eat or drink—all belong to fatal signs.
