Xiu Ranzi, in "Treatise on Great Wind" (Da Feng Lun), states: The so-called "Great Wind" (Leprosy) presents with a wide variety of symptoms. Some cases arise from excessive desires, leading to exhaustion and injury of Qi and Blood; some result from accumulated anger, sorrow, or fright; some occur because breaks in the skin of the hands and feet allow Wind-Toxin to invade; others are caused by intoxication, exposure to wind and rain, cold, wading through water, or contact with damp miasma, where pathogenic factors invade the skin and muscles. Upon initial infection, this eventually leads to the affliction of "Great Wind." The etiology involves pathogens flowing into the meridians, transmitting to the Zang-Fu organs, manifesting in the four limbs, steaming internally and externally, thereby forming blisters and tinea-like lesions.
The origin of the disease is categorized into three types of syndromes, and there are five types of fatal outcomes: The first type is "Water Wind"; the second is "Transmission/Progression" of the disease; the third is failure of self-care and regulation. The five fatal outcomes are as follows: First, "Skin Death," characterized by numbness of the skin, eversion of the tongue, and eventual hoarseness, rendering it incurable. Second, "Wind invading the Lung Meridian," where the Lung Meridian is affected, initially causing the loss of eyebrows. Third, "Wind invading the Liver Meridian," where the Liver Meridian is affected, causing purple blisters to appear on the face. Fourth, "Wind invading the Kidney Meridian," where the Kidney Meridian is affected, causing perforation to begin on the soles of the feet. Fifth, "Wind invading the Spleen Meridian," where the Spleen Meridian is affected, causing the entire body to resemble tinea lesions. Sixth, "Wind invading the Heart Meridian," where the Heart Meridian is affected, initially damaging the eyes.
Furthermore, this disease may be transmitted generationally through tombs, residences, ancestors, parents, spouses, or family members; or it may be contracted due to carelessness outside, such as contact with cesspools, bedrooms, or beddings. If one seeks treatment, it is often difficult to achieve relief; some patients die within one and a half to two years.
Generally, those infected with this disease should seek early medical intervention for easier recovery. One must carefully examine and differentiate the treatment; otherwise, a slight error will lead to a disastrous outcome. Regrettably, even for skilled physicians, if the patient does not isolate themselves in a quiet room, abstain from alcohol and sexual activity, cleanse their mind and heart, and sincerely confess and repent to the divine healer, cure is unattainable. One must also avoid foods that trigger Wind, agitate Qi, or are greasy, salty, pungent, or raw/cold. It is essential to maintain patience and a broad-minded attitude before taking various medicines. Dosages can be adjusted freely, and preparations made into pills or powders according to standard methods. With adherence to these protocols, cures are assured. Initially, administer "Pills for Draining Evil Blood." If pus discharges and ulcers exist, decoctions should be used for fumigation and washing. Within ten days to a month, healthy flesh will regenerate. Existing sores will gradually subside and cease to flare up; nasal and ear passages will become clear; the skin will feel comfortable; eyebrows and beard will regrow; complexion will become lustrous; and the Five Zang Organs will harmonize. How can such efficacy be fully described in writing? The specific formulas are listed below:
