Medicine connects with the Dao of immortality, and its practice specializes in specific fields; how could it be easily understood by later scholars? If one does not recognize the cause of a syndrome, one will inevitably prescribe remedies arbitrarily, thereby harming people. How can one not be cautious?
Following my master's instructions, I previously compiled the *Waike Jiyan Fang* (Collected Verified Formulas for External Diseases) transmitted by Mr. Li from Xiping, who was skilled in observation. This work is already circulating in the world. However, this present collection was obtained by my master from Mr. Xiao Rongke of Luling. It belongs to a different lineage from the previous external medicine texts and was not included in the same publication. Nevertheless, these formulas include illustrations for various types of sores and ulcers, making them easy to understand. One can match symptoms to medications, avoiding errors. They are indeed excellent prescriptions. Having obtained this edition, how could I dare to keep it secret? Therefore, I have had it printed together with the *Jiji Xianfang* (Emergency Immortal Formulas) to share with those destined to receive it. If one can perceive the signs before they manifest and prevent disaster before it takes shape, exploring the subtleties of these formulas and broadening one's flexible clinical methods—can this be said to offer no minor benefit? Thus, I describe the origins and efficacy details of these formulas to demonstrate their credibility to readers.
Written by Yuanran Daoren in the first month of winter (lunar October) of the Yihai year, the 28th year of Hongwu.
**Rescuing from Hanging:** From morning until evening, even if the body is cold, life can be restored. If there is slight warmth under the heart, even if more than a day has passed, rescue is possible. Quickly lift the victim, remove the rope. One person should pull the hair firmly without letting go, while stepping on both shoulders. Another person should massage the chest and flex/extend the limbs, rubbing as if reviving them, then feed them rice gruel broth. This method saves all who are treated.
**Rescuing from Drowning:** First, pry open the victim's mouth with a knife, place a chopstick horizontally between the teeth to allow water drainage. Alternatively, place the victim prone over an urn or steamer, resting their head on the shoulder, back against the vessel, and carry them upside down to drain the water completely. Scrape wall earth, spread a layer on the ground, and lay the victim supine upon it. Alternately blow air into the umbilicus and anus to connect upper and lower qi. Also, insufflate a small amount of *Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum* (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) powder into the nose. If slightly revived, administer clear rice gruel.
Another method by Sun Simiao for drowning: Quickly untie the victim's clothes and belts, moxa-ignite the center of the umbilicus (Shenque, CV8), and life will return.
**Rescuing from Freezing in Winter Water:** For those with cold limbs, inability to speak, and only faint breath, do not immediately apply moxibustion. Place a cloth bag filled with hot ashes on the heart area; replace with fresh hot ones when cooled. Once eyes open, administer warm wine or rice drink.
**Rescuing from Heatstroke Death:** Do not expose to cold [text missing]. Instead, frequently wash and massage the chest and abdomen with warm water. In urgent situations on the road, use hot earth from the path, place it on the abdomen/umbilicus, and have someone urinate into the umbilicus to restore life.
**Rescuing from Summer Thirst Death:** Use hot earth from the road and garlic in equal parts, mash finely, mix with water, strain, and drink to restore life.
**Rescuing from Apoplexy (Stroke):** Sudden loss of consciousness is often due to phlegm obstruction. Grind 2 qian of *Alumen* (Alum) into fine powder, mix with fresh ginger juice, pry open the mouth, and pour in. The saliva may be vomited out or dissolved and swallowed, leading to immediate awakening.
**Rescuing from Evil Qi Attack:** For sudden unconsciousness due to evil qi, grind fresh chives (*Allium tuberosum*) to extract juice and insufflate into the nose.
**Rescuing from Unconsciousness during Sleep:** Drip chive juice into the nose. In winter, crush chives with roots to extract juice and administer.
**Treating Trauma from Falling:** For death-like state caused by blood stasis rushing to the heart after falling from height: Take one large cup of *Fermented Soybean* (Douchi), add two bowls of water, boil three times, strain, and drink. If apnea occurs instantly and speech is lost, and medication cannot be prepared in time, pry open the mouth and pour in hot urine.
**The Five Extinctions (Wu Jue):** Crushing death, hanging death, drowning death, nightmare death, and postpartum syncope/death.
For any of the above conditions, grind *Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum* (Prepared Pinellia Tuber) alone into powder, form pills the size of beans, and insufflate into the nose. Life will return in an instant.
