Facial flushing. Differentiate between Yin poison and Yang poison. If the Taiyang disease pattern is not resolved, Yang Qi becomes constrained and stagnant, causing facial flushing; Baidu San (Decoction for Overcoming Toxins) is appropriate. If there is deficiency in the lower Jiao, it results in a false redness on the face resembling "floating Yang" (Dai Yang). This is a Yin pattern. One must further examine what other symptoms are present and determine which meridian is affected to administer targeted treatment. Zhang Zhongjing stated that ke ni (coughing with reverse flow of Qi) is synonymous with yue (hiccups), which presents as either a Yin pattern or a Yang pattern. The Yin pattern arises from Cold in the Stomach. There are also cases where the initial condition was Heat, but due to excessive sweating followed by improper use of emetic or purgative therapies, the condition transformed.
