Ms. Lü was just thirty years old. Normally, she had a sallow complexion and a weak constitution. When she sought a prescription for insufficient lactation, I prescribed Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction), which proved effective. Several years later, she returned because her placenta (fetal membrane) failed to be expelled after childbirth. Upon examination, I stated: "This is due to Qi deficiency failing to promote transportation and Blood deficiency failing to nourish and moisten." I instructed her to take Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction). The crowd argued that since she had just given birth, the placenta's accumulated blood was obstructing its expulsion, and tonification was inappropriate at this time. Someone provided a folk remedy using one liang of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) decocted in water, claiming it could expel the placenta miraculously. Everyone praised this idea. However, shortly after ingestion, the patient immediately suffered from syncope and collapse.
An elderly clan auntie over eighty years old experienced the return of Tian Gui (menstruation). Her bleeding became increasingly persistent and dripping, sometimes resembling Ben Jing (sudden gushing hemorrhage). She suffered from dizziness, poor appetite, palpitations, and insomnia. I prescribed Hei Guipi Tang (Black Return to the Spleen Decoction), but it was ineffective. Other physicians administered various formulas for clearing heat, tonifying, and astringing, also without effect. After lingering with the illness for several months, she passed away. I have observed many elderly women suffering from this condition who could not be cured. It is rarely mentioned in ancient texts and is considered a rare and difficult disease.
The daughter of the Fang family in the neighboring village was only four years old. Her mother brought her to my residence for treatment. When I asked about the ailment, she said it was Dai Xia (leukorrhea). When I asked when it started, she explained that the girl had nocturnal enuresis and often used cloth pads on the bed. Last spring, while drying the cloth in the morning, they suddenly saw white discharge, thinking it was accidental. Later, the discharge occurred frequently and continuously. Gradually, the child developed a sallow face and emaciation, with reduced food intake. This had persisted for a year, recurring intermittently. Local doctors claimed they had never seen such a case. I stated: "This is due to weak congenital endowment and Spleen deficiency complicated by damp-heat. However, as the child's innate vitality is not yet fully developed, premature use of astringents is indeed inappropriate. Instruct her to take Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) at night and Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) in the morning." After one month, there was an effect. Six months later, the disease recurred, but adhering to the original formula led to recovery. Subsequently, we heard no news. Later, reading *Yitang Sanji* (Records from Yitang), I found a record of a seven-year-old girl suffering from this condition. Although she was cured, after marriage and pregnancy, she suffered uterine prolapse immediately after delivery, which contributed to her early death. It is likely that the Fang girl would follow a similar fate.
Hong Daden served as a laborer. His constitution was weak, and he worked hard. Initially, his illness presented as tightness and pain in the jaw joint. After taking two doses of Shufeng Yao (wind-dispelling medicines), he could not rise from bed or open his mouth. He could only drink rice wash liquid daily, which was poured into his mouth via the spout of a teapot. His limbs were spasmodic and tense; urination required two people to lift him. The pain was severe, accompanied by profuse sweating. His pulse was fine, weak, and soggy, particularly weak in the Chi positions (kidney area). Some suggested considering an external contraction and still using wind-dispelling drugs. I said: "This is Jing Bing (spasm disease). Qi and Blood are severely depleted; administering wind-dispelling drugs will lead to death." I proposed using a large dose of Buyuan Jian (Tonify the Origin Decoction). After more than ten days, there was no improvement, and the family urgently requested a change of prescription. I said: "No need to change; the medicinal power has not yet taken effect." Let him continue taking the original prescription for twenty doses. Gradually, he gained the ability to move. After two months of medication, he finally stepped out of his courtyard.
