Those with excessive fire are suffering from hyperactive ministerial fire (Xianghuo, the physiological fire residing in the Liver and Kidneys that governs reproduction and development). If intercourse lasts too long, the woman’s sexual excitement may have subsided before the man ejaculates; or by the time the man ejaculates, the woman’s desire has already faded. Under such circumstances, how can conception occur? It is appropriate to administer Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill).
Buyin Wan (Nourish Yin Pill)
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried with salted wine), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, stir-fried with salted wine), each 4 liang; Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, steamed with wine and pounded); Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted with rendered fat), each 6 liang.
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Use pig spinal cord steamed until cooked, mix with honey, and form pills the size of wu zi (Cibotii Spores). Take 50–60 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, washed down with light salt water decoction.
In men, if ministerial fire is blazing, it scorches and damages true yin (Zhenyin, the fundamental Yin fluids of the body), leading to extreme Yang. Extreme Yang leads to hyperactivity, or excessive rigidity and persistence during intercourse. If too rigid, harmony between Yin and Yang during coitus fails to achieve, resulting in infertility. It is appropriate to administer Yannian Yisi Dan (Longevity and Offspring-Enhancing Pill).
Yannian Yisi Dan (Longevity and Offspring-Enhancing Pill)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), 3 liang; Tandong (Asparagi Radix, soaked in wine, heart removed), 3 liang; Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, soaked in wine, heart removed), 3 liang; Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, steamed with wine and pounded); Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, each 2 liang); Fuling (Poria, soaked in wine and sun-dried), 5 liang; Digupi (Lycii Cortex, soaked in wine), 5 liang.
Additionally, add Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, 8 liang, soaked thoroughly in rice washing water, scraped with a bamboo knife, sliced, placed in a clay pot with 1 jin of black mutton and 3 he of black beans. Add water as needed, place on a steamer grate, cover tightly to prevent steam leakage, and steam for one to two shichen [2–4 hours] until the meat is tender. Remove and dry.)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix with honey, and form pills the size of wu zi. Take 70–80 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, washed down with warm wine.
If a man’s penile prepuce is tender and soft, causing unbearable itching upon slight contact, then during each act of intercourse, the male essence is expelled while the female essence has not yet flowed. This condition is called "Jingji" (Essence Fatigue). It is appropriate to administer Zhuangyang Tang (Strengthen Yang Decoction).
Zhuangyang Tang (Strengthen Yang Decoction)
Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus) and Digupi (Lycii Cortex), equal parts. Decoct for fumigation and washing, and rub manually. However, washing must be performed while the penis is erect for best effect. If manual rubbing causes skin abrasion, do not be alarmed; recovery will occur within one or two days. Perform fumigation and washing several times a day (this utilizes the property of the bark being tough and durable).
Women with both Qi and Blood deficiency, irregular menstruation, either intermittent flow or turbid leukorrhea, abdominal pain, lower back soreness, poor appetite, emaciation, and infertility should take Yulin Zhu (Fetus-Nurturing Pearl) for one to two jin, which will facilitate conception. No other fertility-enhancing formulas surpass this one.
Yulin Zhu (Fetus-Nurturing Pearl)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma); Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, honey-roasted); Fuling (Poria); Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-stir-fried), each 2 liang; Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma); Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-roasted), each 1 liang; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix); Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), each 4 liang; Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen, processed), 4 liang; Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex, wine-stir-fried); Lujiaoshuang (Cornu Cervi Degelatinatum); Chuanjiao (Sichuan Zanthoxypi Pericarpium), each 2 liang, remove seeds.
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder, mix with honey, and form pills the size of a walnut. Chew 1–2 pills on an empty stomach, washed down with plain hot water, or swallow small pills directly.
If menstruation is delayed accompanied by abdominal pain, add Poguzhi (Kuzhenzi, i.e., Cuscutae Semen, wine-stir-fried) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), each 1 liang. In severe cases, add Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked in decoction and stir-fried) 5 qian. If there is abundant leukorrhea with abdominal pain, add Poguzhi (wine-stir-fried) 1 liang and Beiwuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus) 5 qian, or add Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi, vinegar-quenched) 1 liang. If uterine cold is severe, or if there is diarrhea or pain, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), each several qian. If there is blood heat with excessive fire, early menstruation, and internal heat, add Chuanxuduan (Dipsaci Radix) and Digupi (Lycii Cortex), each 2 liang. Alternatively, use a decoction temporarily to clear the heat first, then take this formula, or use a decoction as a guiding vehicle, according to suitability.
