The delivery of a parturient woman must follow nature's course and should not be rushed or forced. Her spirit and mind should be kept calm to prevent panic, waiting until the melon is ripe and the stem falls off naturally. Therefore, when employing a midwife (Wenpo), one must select an experienced, mature, and loyal person, instructing them in advance. When labor begins, they must be instructed to remain calm and composed, strictly prohibiting any manual force to hasten delivery. There are two types of midwives who improperly force delivery: those who do not understand the timing and fear being late; and those eager to finish quickly with one family so they can go to another. They often forcibly test the amniotic fluid, pinch, and pressure the mother to push the baby out, frequently resulting in the infant's head and body not being in position while hands or feet emerge first, leading to transverse or breech presentation, causing significant harm. If the pain contractions are not tight, there are no "golden flowers" (visual disturbances) in the eyes, the middle joint of the fingers does not throb, and the vaginal opening and anus are not protruding, she must absolutely not be allowed to sit on the birthing mat (Zuocao). Furthermore, if there are irregular breathing patterns or twins that have not yet been delivered, all such situations require steady and secret comfort, without letting the parturient woman know, for fear that shock will scatter the Qi, making delivery even more difficult. There are also deceitful and cunning midwives who deliberately make groaning or surprised sounds, exaggerate minor issues into major ones to display their own ability, and seek heavy rewards, thereby causing the parturient woman to become frightened and suspicious, causing considerable harm. There are also sly midwives who intend to harm others, secretly using their fingers to break the fetal membranes (Baoyi); this must be strictly prevented. In summary, everything relies on the parturient woman taking charge of herself; one should not solely rely on listening to these midwives. These people have no books to study and no masters to teach them, knowing nothing of this theory. They often stubbornly stick to their own opinions. As soon as they enter the door, without asking whether it is early or late, they order her to sit on the birthing mat, urge her to exert force, rub her waist, wipe her belly, or insert hands to probe, often leading to death. How can one not be cautious!
When a pregnant woman experiences abdominal pain near term, which comes and goes, it is called "Nongtong" (Playing Pain), which is not a sign of true labor. If the abdomen hurts but the lower back does not hurt significantly, it is not a sign of true labor. If the fetus is high and has not descended, it is not a sign of true labor. If the anus is not protruding, it is not a sign of true labor. If the amniotic sac has not ruptured and blood has not appeared, it is not a sign of true labor. Even if amniotic fluid and blood have appeared, but there is no abdominal pain, it is not a sign of true labor. In these cases, let her eat steadily and sleep peacefully, or walk around and endure patiently; do not allow her to sit on the birthing mat.
