The *I Ching* (Book of Changes) states: "When Heaven and Earth interact, the transformation of all things becomes profound; when man and woman join in essence, all things are born." It also says: "When Yin and Yang harmonize their virtue, firmness and softness acquire their forms." This is precisely what is meant by "solitary Yang does not generate, solitary Yin does not complete." The relationship between husband and wife is akin to that of Heaven and Earth. The way of Heaven and Earth is that Yin and Yang harmonize to nurture all things; the way of husband and wife is that Yin and Yang harmonize to give birth to children. If the father's sperm or the mother's blood is deficient in any way, yet one claims pregnancy can occur, this has never been seen. Therefore, those seeking offspring must first examine whether the wife's menstruation is regulated. "Jing" (Menstruation) means regularity. Just as it comes on time every month and stops at the appointed time without changing its routine, it is called menstruation. If menstruation is irregular, with cycles coming early or late, frequent amenorrhea, purple or pale color, varying amounts, leading to red and white leukorrhea, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, accompanied by night fevers and other symptoms, conception will certainly not occur. Even if pregnancy is achieved, spontaneous abortion, miscarriage, difficult labor, infertility, or sickly children are common occurrences. This is why we discuss diseases of menstrual blood. Furthermore, complex syndromes caused by the Three Causes (External invasion of Six Evils, Internal injury of Seven Emotions, and Non-internal/Non-external causes) must be regulated. If the Six Evils invade from outside, the Seven Emotions disturb from within, or due to improper living habits, overwork, and dietary irregularities, these conditions should especially be treated before regulating menstruation. If the body's righteous Qi is insufficient and Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi are weak, wind-cold pathogens will take advantage of the deficiency to attack. They may invade the meridians; or travel through the intestines and abdomen. They may cause disharmony of the Spleen and Stomach, impairing their function of digestion and transportation, leading to reduced food intake, deficit in the generation of Qi and Blood, and thus loss of nourishment for the Five Zang organs and hundred bones. Consequently, Ying and Wei Qi stagnate, skin and muscles become yellow and dry, and the face lacks luster; or combined with Qi deficiency of the Large Intestine, diarrhea and difficulty in defecation may occur. If pathogens flow into the Guanyuan (CV-4) area, it leads to sterility. Wherever injury occurs, the Zang-Fu organs can induce disease; this is merely an example citing external wind-cold. Similar reasoning applies to internal injuries such as summerheat, dampness, dryness, and fire. The medical classics state: "The thirty-six diseases of women are all caused by the external invasion of Six Evils, internal depression of Seven Emotions, and factors such as overexertion." Therefore, the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) are the seas of convergence for the Twelve Meridians. Thus, women's diseases manifest through the Shao Yin (Lesser Yin) and Tai Yang (Greater Yang) meridians. If these diseases are cured first, and care is taken to follow physiological laws, then Ying and Wei Qi will be sufficient, and the Cou Li (pores and interstitial spaces) will be dense, preventing the invasion of Six Evils? With smooth-flowing Qi and Blood, calm temperament, and serene spirit, how can Seven Emotions disturb? In this way, Yin and Yang coordinate, menstruation becomes regular, and after taking conception-promoting pills and employing seed-enabling methods, natural conception will surely occur without doubt. As for men's diseases, they must also be carefully examined. If Essence and Qi are insufficient, offspring are hard to conceive. Conditions include Kidney deficiency with seminal emission, scanty and clear semen; impotence during intercourse; nocturnal sweating with seminal leakage, turbid urine, and fatigue in the lower back; yin deficiency due to excessive sexual desire, all leading to depletion of Marrow and Essence. Moreover, men who are not honest and cautious, engaging in reckless promiscuity, need not even be mentioned. Those seeking heirs must ensure both husband and wife are free of disease, strictly observe moderation, with abundant blood and sufficient essence, so there is no difficulty in bearing children. Medication must be taken continuously for a long time to nourish and cultivate, not intermittently, until Kidney Qi is sufficient and Essence and Marrow are full; once a child is born, medication can stop.
