As stated in the medical classics: "Due to summerheat, sweating occurs; when vexation arises, there is panting and loud shouting (loud voice)." It also states: "Yang deficiency leads to external cold, Yin deficiency leads to internal heat." This syndrome mostly belongs to Yin deficiency, where water (Kidney Yin) is depleted and fire (Heart Fire) is flourishing. Consequently, vexation (mental uneasiness) must be accompanied by restlessness (physical agitation), which is common during the summer months. It also frequently occurs after vomiting and diarrhea, presenting with vexation and thirst. After contracting Cold Damage (Shanghan) or following childbirth in women, if vexation, thirst, cold extremities, and a deep pulse are present, this indicates injury to the primordial Qi, with pathogenic factors latent in the extreme Yin organs, transforming according to the constitution. With six pulses being deep and slow, dry fluids, and a dry tongue, it is appropriate to use formulas containing dried ginger (Ganjiang) and prepared aconite (Fuzi) to restore Yin and return Yang. If the disturbance of Ying and Wei mechanisms causes hyperactive vexation to recur, or if symptoms appear similar but the pulse is deep, rapid, and forceful, accompanied by thirst and constipation, this constitutes excess-heat, and Chengqi Decoction should be used to purge. For exterior and interior excess-heat with vexation and thirst, Renshen Baihu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) is indicated. For severe thirst after Cold Damage, where drinking water induces vomiting, and extreme restlessness, Zhuye Shigao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction) is used (both seen in Shanghan Lun); remove Ginseng and add Anemarrhena (Zhimu). For vexation and thirst, Chen Sha Liuyi San (Cinnabar Six-One Powder) or Dengxin Cao Tang (Juncus Decoction) may be taken; for vexatious heat and thirst, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is used (formula see section on Dysuria); for mental confusion, Miaoxiang San (Wonderful Fragrance Powder) is used (formula see section on Epilepsy); for insomnia, Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear Heart Lotus Seed Decoction) is used (see section on Strangury). A large and slow pulse is auspicious; a rapid and tense pulse is ominous.
Main Formula: Ophiopogon Radix (Maimendong, 3 qian), Poria with Hostwood (Fushen, 2.5 qian), Ziziphus Seed (Suanzaoren, stir-fried and crushed, 2 qian), Angelica Sinensis (Danggui, 1.5 qian), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia, processed, 1 qian), Roasted Licorice Root (Zhigancao, 0.7 qian); add three slices of fresh ginger, one jujube, a ball of bamboo shavings (Zhuru), and wheat (Xiaomai, stir-fried, 3 qian). Decoct and take.
For deficiency, add Ginseng (Renshen), Astragalus (Huangqi), and Xiao Cao; for Heart deficiency, add Ginseng (Renshen) and Polygala Root (Yuanzhi); for phlegm, add Tangerine Peel (Juhong) and Bamboo Juice (Zhuli); for extreme thirst, add Gypsum (Shigao) and Anemarrhena (Zhimu).
Xiao Cao Tang: Treats deficiency勞 (Xu Lao) caused by excessive worry and thought, leading to seminal emission, white turbidity, and restless anxiety.

Suanzaoren Tang: Treats worsening of Huoluan (cholera-like disorder) with vomiting and diarrhea, Xu Lao with vexation, and qi rebellion causing insomnia.

Another prescription: Suanzaoren (stir-fried and crushed, 3 qian), taken with Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction).
Another prescription: Boil and eat bitter bamboo shoots (also treats Xiao Ke/thirst-quenching disorder, promotes urination, directs qi downward, and treats wind-heat podagra). For inability to sweat, resulting in vexation, bone pain, and vomiting/revulsion, use Renshen and Chenpi (each 2 qian), Zhuru and Zhigancao (each 1 qian), add ginger and jujube, decoct, and take.
