Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi) accumulates in the chest, emerges from the throat, penetrates the heart vessels, and governs respiration. The *Jueqi* Chapter states: "The Upper Jiao opens and develops, disseminating the flavors of the five grains; it steams the skin, fills the body, and moistens the hair, like mist and dew irrigating [all things]. This is called Zong Qi." The term "Zong" implies greatness or magnitude.
Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) is Yin Qi, specifically the essence extracted from food and drink. That portion of this essence which circulates within the meridians is termed Ying Qi. Ying Qi originates in the Middle Jiao; after emerging from the stomach, it proceeds to the Upper Jiao, ascends to the lungs, receives Qi, extracts fluids, and transforms into blood to nourish the living body. Nothing is more precious than this. Its circulation begins at the Lung Meridian of Hand-Taiyin, gradually descends, and terminates at the Liver Meridian of Foot-Jueyin. It travels through the twelve vessel pathways along with Zong Qi. Thus, it is said that the clear and pure part becomes Ying Qi, and Ying Qi circulates within the vessels.
Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) is Yang Qi, specifically the fierce and rapid Qi derived from food and drink. That portion of floating Qi which is swift, slippery, and does not follow the course of the meridians is termed Wei Qi. Wei Qi originates in the Lower Jiao and gradually ascends. Each day at dawn, when Yin is exhausted, Yang Qi emerges from the Jingming acupoint (BL1) of the eyes, ascends to the head, and during the day begins with the Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang, circulating through the six Yang meridians before entering the Yin aspects. At night, it begins with the Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin, circulating through the six Yin meridians before returning to the Kidneys. It completes twenty-five circuits during the day and twenty-five during the night. It does not follow Zong Qi but circulates independently among the skin and muscle layers of each meridian. Thus, it is said that the turbid and heavy part becomes Wei Qi, and Wei Qi circulates outside the vessels.
