The chapter "Nine Needles and Twelve Yuan Source Points" from the *Ling Shu* (Spiritual Pivot) states: The five Zang organs are paired with the six Fu organs; beyond the six Fu organs, there are twelve Yuan Source points. These twelve Yuan Source points derive their Qi from the "Four Passes." The Four Passes govern the diseases of the five Zang organs; when the five Zang organs are afflicted, one should select these twelve Yuan Source points for treatment. (The Qi of the Zang and Fu organs communicates internally and externally; thus, the exterior of the five Zang organs connects to the six Fu organs, and beyond the six Fu organs lie the twelve Yuan Source points, which originate from the Four Passes. The "Four Passes" refer to the two elbows and two knees, which are the major joints of the body. Therefore, regarding the Jing-River-Stream-Well-He Five Shu points, those on the upper limbs do not extend beyond the elbows, and those on the lower limbs do not extend beyond the knees. However, these twelve Yuan Source points can therefore treat diseases of the five Zang organs.) The twelve Yuan Source points are where the five Zang organs receive the Qi and flavors of the three hundred and sixty-five seasonal influences. When the five Zang organs have disease, the pathological Qi manifests at the twelve Yuan Source points, each having its specific location. By clearly knowing the Yuan Source points and observing their responses, one can understand the harm caused by diseases of the five Zang organs. (These twelve Yuan Source points are where the Qi of the five Zang organs gathers and where the Qi and flavors of the three hundred and sixty-five seasonal influences emerge. Thus, when the five Zang organs are diseased, their Qi must respond at the twelve Yuan Source points with specific manifestations. Knowing the Yuan Source points and observing their responses allows one to discern the harm of diseases in the five Zang organs.)
The organ belonging to Yang within Yin (Shao Yin) is the Lung (Fei), whose Yuan Source point is Taiyuan (LU-9), bilateral, two points. (The Heart and Lung reside above the diaphragm and are both considered Yang organs, but the Lung is Yin within Yang, hence termed Shao Yin. Its Yuan Source point emerges from the two Taiyuan points, which correspond to the Cun Kou pulse position.) The organ belonging to Yang within Yang (Tai Yang) is the Heart (Xin), whose Yuan Source point is Daling (PC-7), bilateral, two points. (The Heart is Yang within Yang, hence termed Tai Yang. Its Yuan Source point emerges from Daling. Note that Daling belongs to the Pericardium Meridian of Hand-Jueyin. In the chapter "Evil Invaders," it is recorded: The Yellow Emperor asked, "Why does the Hand-Shaoyin meridian alone lack acupoints?" Qibo replied, "Shaoyin refers to the Heart meridian. The Heart is the great master of the five Zang and six Fu organs and the residence of the Spirit. Its substance is solid, and evil cannot invade it. If evil invades, the Heart is damaged; if the Heart is damaged, the Spirit departs; if the Spirit departs, death occurs. Therefore, any evil affecting the Heart actually affects the Pericardium (Bao Luo), which is the meridian of the Heart Master. Hence, this text refers to Daling." The two Daling points are located in the depression between the two tendons below the wrist crease.) The organ belonging to Yin within Yang (Shao Yang) is the Liver (Gan), whose Yuan Source point is Taichong (LR-3), bilateral, two points. (The Liver, Spleen, and Kidney reside below the diaphragm and are all considered Yin organs, but the Liver is Yang within Yin, hence termed Shao Yang. Its Yuan Source point emerges from the two Taichong points, located two cun posterior to the root of the big toe, in the depression where the artery beats.) The organ belonging to Yin as Supreme Yin (Zhi Yin) is the Spleen (Pi), whose Yuan Source point is Taibai (SP-3), bilateral, two points. (The Spleen belongs to Earth and symbolizes the ground, hence termed Supreme Yin within Yin. Its Yuan Source point emerges from the two Taibai points, located in the depression behind and medial to the sesamoid bone of the big toe.) The organ belonging to Yin as Great Yin (Tai Yin) is the Kidney (Shen), whose Yuan Source point is Taixi (KI-3), bilateral, two points. (The Kidney is located inferiorly and belongs to Water, hence termed Great Yin within Yin. Its Yuan Source point emerges from the two Taixi points, located in the depression behind the medial malleolus where the artery beats. The detailed meanings of Yin and Yang of the five Zang organs mentioned above are also found in the chapter "Yin Yang Categories V.") The Yuan Source point of the Gao (fatty tissue) is Jiawei (CV-15), single point, one. (Jiawei is a Ren Mai point, located five fen below the xiphoid process.) The Yuan Source point of the Huang (membranous tissue) is Boying (CV-12), single point, one. (Boying is also known as Xia Qihai or Xia Huang, located one and a half cun below the umbilicus, and is a Ren Mai point. "Bo" sounds like "Bei"; "Ying" sounds like "Ying".) All these twelve Yuan Source points govern the diseases of the five Zang and six Fu organs. (The Yuan Source points of the five Zang organs mentioned above are two each, plus the Yuan Source points of Gao and Huang, totaling twelve. Since the Qi of the interior and exterior of the Zang and Fu organs all connect here, they can treat diseases of the five Zang and six Fu organs.)
