Summary of "Ben Shi Fang Xu Ji"
"Ben Shi Fang Xu Ji" consists of ten volumes, authored by Mr. Xu Shuwei of the Song Dynasty. The ten volumes of "Ben Shi Fang" written by Mr. Xu circulating in the market were an important book for Ye Tianshi's medical research in the Qing Dynasty. However, the ten volumes of "Xu Ji" have never been transmitted in our country, nor have they been recorded in various bibliographies; thus, our medical community was almost unaware of this book. Mr. Qiu Jisheng, the director of our society, obtained a Japanese printed edition and collected it, which truly verifies the saying "when rituals are lost, seek them in the wild" (cultural losses can be recovered from remote areas or overseas), and indeed, it is not false. The various formulas recorded therein are more detailed and complete than those in the first ten volumes of the "Chu Ji". This secret manuscript is something every TCM practitioner desires to appreciate, as is human nature. It is hereby reprinted to feed the colleagues who seek out lost works.
Volume One of Supplement to the General Goodness Formulas for Classified Syndromes
Discussion on Treating Various Deficiencies, Promoting Food Intake, and Generating Qi and Blood
Human beings rely on Yin-Yang, Five Elements, Luck (Yun Qi), Ying (Nutritive) Wei (Defensive) to preserve their bodies. Any slight disease in the body is non-other than caused by deficiency-cold of the Zang-Fu organs. When the Zang-Fu organs are deficient and cold, Ying and Wei become disregulated, and diseases arise. Moreover, extreme deficiency-cold can generate deficient Yang, or when the limbs, waist, kidneys, eyes, mouth, teeth, San Jiao (Triple Burner), and Six Fu organs encounter urgent diseases, each can lead to death. Furthermore, the twelve meridians of Three Yang and Three Yin on both left and right hands must all possess Stomach Qi, or even if diseased, still retain Stomach Qi; cases without Stomach Qi cannot be saved regardless of the severity of the illness. Why must one rely on Stomach Qi? Because the Stomach receives Grain Qi (Gu Qi); when Grain Qi is generated, it can produce Qi and Blood. When Qi and Blood are robust, Ying and Wei do not decline, and diseases naturally dissipate. The interior and exterior of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs all originate from Grain Qi, transmitting and generating Qi and Blood to nourish the Five Zang. If Qi and Blood are insufficient, the nourishment for the Five Zang and Six Fu loses its source. Additionally, factors such as worry and overthinking, irregular emotions, physical fatigue, unregulated drinking, excessive sexual activity, exposure to snow and frost, and latent summer-heat with stagnant heat cause loss and dispersion, leading to disease. Regarding the last eighteen days of late Spring, late Summer, late Autumn, and late Winter, Spleen Earth is at its peak prosperity during these times. Whenever this occurs, Kidney Water is controlled, so one should tonify the Kidney. Therefore, Heart, Lung, Liver, Spleen, and Kidney each have periods of decline and prosperity, and mutual generation and control relationships. For example, Heart controls Lung, Lung controls Liver, Liver controls Spleen, Spleen controls Kidney, and Kidney controls Heart; when prosperous, the control becomes stronger. Areas subject to control should therefore be supplemented. However, tonifying Spleen in Spring, Lung in Summer, Liver in Autumn, and Heart in Winter... Ancient sages, even when healthy, commonly used herbal methods to regulate and protect the Spleen and Stomach, ensuring food intake to preserve Grain Qi, achieving appropriateness in all matters. Modern mediocre doctors apply their intentions incorrectly; let us cite a few examples. For instance, when the Kidney Meridian declines, some claim to tonify the Kidney using Tian Xiong (Aconitum kusnezoffii root) and Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root). However, the Kidney belongs to North Ren-Gui Water, preferring dampness and detesting dryness. Using extremely drying drugs like Tian Xiong and Fu Zi, how can it tonify the Kidney? Moreover, Kidney Meridian deficiency results from extreme decline of the Five Zang and Six Fu gradually affecting the Kidney, causing various diseases. For deficiency of the lower part Kidney Meridian, direct tonification is not necessary. The most excellent methods are two: First, only tonify the Spleen and protect the Stomach, ensuring food intake to preserve Grain Qi; Second, regarding the method of generating Qi and Blood, at midnight (Zi hour), which is the correct timing for the North, when Kidney Water is at its peak, it captures blood and transforms essence. When essence and Qi are full, the Kidney Meridian is not deficient, and diseases disappear. Men capture blood and transform essence; women can regulate menstruation. If Grain Qi is incomplete, Qi and Blood will not generate. If Qi and Blood do not generate, even if Kidney Water is prosperous at midnight, blood cannot compensate, the Kidney has no essence to transform, the Dantian is not secure, and the Kidney remains deficient. From this perspective, when the Kidney Meridian and Five Zang organs are deficient and declining, if doctors do not understand the origin and flow and use methods blindly, initially it does not harm the disease. Now, I specifically list two methods: first tonifying Spleen and Stomach, then regulating Qi and Blood, all collected here. I do not wish to keep this private but pass it on to those interested.
Wu Ji Wan (Earth Circle Pill) treats men and women with weak constitutions, tasteless appetite, declining Qi and Blood, lack of muscle growth, stiffness in neck and back, weakness in waist and legs, chest and diaphragm distension, excessive sleep with little waking, constant drowsiness, vivid dreams at night, chronic spleen worms, occasional nausea, belching acid and vomiting water, infant vomiting milk, adult fan wei (reverse stomach function), treating all these. This medicine protects the Spleen, opens the Stomach, promotes food intake, grows muscles, generates Qi and Blood, refines essence and marrow, preserves Stomach Qi, prevents Dantian depletion, and ensures Kidney Meridian is not deficient; this is its efficacy.
