My younger cousin, due to mental exertion and labor, experienced heat generated by fatigue, manifesting as polyphagia with rapid hunger (Xiao Gu Shan Ji). When sitting, his hands and feet trembled; when sleeping, he felt his limbs were heavy and sinking; in dreams, he felt his body splitting into two; his spirit was vague and distracted, he yawned frequently with qi leaking out. His right pulse was small and weak, and his left pulse was deficient and soft, unresponsive to pressure. This was caused by excessive labor exhausting the spirit, such that the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) could not be anchored and controlled. If flatulence occurred, one must guard against sudden collapse. After eating, the feeling of irritability and stomach discomfort subsided slightly, proving that the central palace (Spleen and Stomach) lacked the power to regulate. Urgent action was needed to anchor Yang to interact with Yin. Prescription: Lu Shen (Radix Ginseng), Fu Shen (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos cum Radice), Shan Yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), Qi Zi (Fructus Lycii), Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Long Gu (Os Draconis et Mammutis), Mu Li (Concha Ostreae) (all ground), Zao Ren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) (stir-fried and ground). After three doses, the mental confusion settled, and all symptoms decreased, except for pain at the vertex and salivation. The original formula was modified by adding young Sang Ye (Folium Mori) (stir-fried) and Gan Ju (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici) to extinguish Wind-Heat of the Liver and Gallbladder, and adding Yi Zhi Ren (Fructus Alpiniae Oxyphyllae) and Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata) (fried with green salt) to control Spleen saliva. After several more doses, and taking paste formulas intermittently, he recovered. This condition occurred because his Stomach Qi was strong and able to accept food, specifically tolerating nourishing and filling treatments. He consumed sea cucumber stewed with duck, as well as ham and eggs, which are "blood and flesh有情" substances (animal-derived tonics that enrich essence and blood). Therefore, he recovered in less than twenty days.
