Twenty Methods of "Tuo Lin" (Disconnection from Position): "Tuo Lin" refers to the situation in the sixty Jiazi cycle where the Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch do not correspond or overlay each other (i.e., the Stem does not sit upon the Branch). This indicates a year of great misfortune. It is not the case that every such occurrence is labeled Tuo Lin; it may happen only once in over a hundred years. During these times, the common people and farmers across the realm lose their livelihoods, living in a state of desolation and uncertainty.
The term "Twenty Methods" refers to the twenty years within a sixty-year cycle that fall into this category. From ancient times to the present, it is customary for the Stems and Branches to be connected without disconnection.
There are twelve years of "Shou Zhi" (Guarding the Branch), where the Stem and Branch typically remain connected:
1. Jia Yin; 2. Yi Mao; 3. Wu Wu; 4. Ji Wei; 5. Geng Shen; 6. Xin You; 7. Bing Wu; 8. Ding Wei; 9. Ren Zi; 10. Gui Chou; 11. Xu Xu; 12. Ji Si. In these twelve years, Shou Zhi prevails, and the Stem and Branch remain connected without disconnection.
Next are twelve years of "Tian Fu" (Heavenly Match), where the Stem and Branch typically connect:
1. Wu Zi; 2. Wu Wu (same as Shou Zhi); 3. Wu Yin; 4. Wu Shen; 5. Bing Xu; 6. Bing Chen; 7. Ji Chou; 8. Ji Wei (same as Shou Zhi, violating the Shou Zhi year); 9. Yi Mao (same as Shou Zhi); 10. Yi You; 11. Ding Si; 12. Ding Hai. Among these twelve Tian Fu years, three overlap with Shou Zhi, resulting in an actual count of nine years.
Next are twelve years of "Di He" (Earthly Harmony), which also typically feature connected Stems and Branches:
1. Geng Zi; 2. Geng Wu; 3. Xin Chou; 4. Xin Wei; 5. Ren Yin; 6. Ren Shen; 7. Gui You; 8. Gui Wei; 9. Jia Chen; 10. Jia Xu; 11. Gui Si; 12. Gui Hai. These twelve years are Di He, where the Stem and Branch remain connected without disconnection.
Next are ten years of "Zhi Fu" (Direct Deity), which also typically feature connected Stems and Branches:
1. Ren Chen; 2. Ren Xu; 3. Bing Wu (same as Shou Zhi); 4. Bing Zi; 5. Bing Yin; 6. Bing Shen; 7. Xin Mao; 8. Xin You (same as Shou Zhi); 9. Yi Wei (same as Shou Zhi and Tian Fu); 10. Ji Chou (same as Tian Fu). Within these ten years, five overlap with the aforementioned categories. Across the previous forty-six years, eight years are repeated, leaving an actual count of thirty-eight years.
Additionally, Jia Zi serves as the head, typically featuring connected Stems and Branches; Ding Mao Sui Hui (Year Master) also does not disconnect. Adding these two years brings the total to forty years where the Stem and Branch are typically connected without disconnection. Therefore, within the sixty-year cycle, only twenty years constitute "Tuo Lin."
1. Yi Chou: When the Qi transitions, facing the Chen direction, one sees only Green Qi manifesting, while White Qi appears and then vanishes; the Qi does not reach the Chou position. This is Yi Wood failing to overlay Chou Earth. This is a year of great misfortune.
2. Wu Chen: The numerical rule is the same as the Excessive Transport. When the Qi transitions, facing the Si direction, Yellow Qi is seen first, followed by Red Qi appearing and then vanishing or remaining unseen. This is Wu Earth failing to overlay Chen Earth, meaning the Heavenly Stem does not overlay the Earthly Branch.
3. Yi Hai: The numerical rule is the same as the Yin Year. When the Qi transitions, facing the Chen direction, Green Qi is seen first, followed by White Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Hai position. This is Yi Wood failing to overlay Hai Water.
4. Ding Chou: The numerical rule is the same as the Yin Year. When the Qi transitions, facing the Wei direction, Red Qi is seen first, followed by Cyan/Green Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Chou position. This is Ding Fire failing to overlay Chou Earth.
5. Ji Mao: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Wei direction, Purple Qi is seen first, followed by Yellow Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Mao position. This is Ji Earth failing to overlay Mao Wood.
6. Geng Chen: Based on the Yang Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Shen direction, White Qi appears and then vanishes; it does not reach the Chen position. This is Geng Metal failing to overlay Chen Earth.
7. Xin Si: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Xu direction, Warm-White Qi is seen first, followed by Black Qi appearing and then vanishing. This is Xin Metal failing to overlay Si Fire.
8. Ren Wu: Based on the Yang Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Hai direction, Black Qi is seen first, followed by Cyan/Green Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Wu position. This is Ren Water failing to overlay Wu Fire.
9. Gui Wei: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the You direction, Azure/Jade Qi is seen first, followed by Red Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Wei position. This is Gui Water failing to overlay Wei Earth.
10. Jia Shen: Based on the Yang Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Yin direction, Cyan/Green Qi is seen first, followed by Yellow Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Shen position. This is Jia Wood failing to overlay Shen Metal.
11. Geng Yin: Based on the Yang Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Shen direction, White Qi appears and then vanishes; it does not reach the Yin position. This is Geng Metal failing to overlay Yin Wood.
12. Xin Mao: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Xu direction, Warm-White Qi is seen first, followed by Black Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Mao position. This is Xin Metal failing to overlay Mao Wood.
13. Jia Wu: Based on the Yang Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Yin direction, Cyan/Green Qi is seen first, followed by Yellow Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Wu position. This is Jia Wood failing to overlay Wu Fire.
14. Yi Wei: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Chen direction, Green Qi is seen first, followed by White Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Wei position. This is Yi Wood failing to overlay Wei Earth.
15. Ding You: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Wei direction, Red Qi is seen first, followed by Cyan/Green Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the You position. This is Ding Fire failing to overlay You Metal.
16. Ji Hai: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Wei direction, Purple Qi is seen first, followed by Yellow Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Hai position. This is Ji Earth failing to overlay Hai Water.
17. Yi Si: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Chen direction, Green Qi is seen first, followed by White Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Si position. This is Yi Wood failing to overlay Si Fire.
18. Ji You: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Wei direction, Purple Qi is seen first, followed by Yellow Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the You position. This is Ji Earth failing to overlay You Metal.
19. Geng Xu: Based on the Yang Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Shen direction, White Qi appears and then vanishes; it does not reach the Xu position. This is Geng Metal failing to overlay Xu Earth.
20. Xin Hai: Based on the Yin Year numerical rule. When the Qi transitions, facing the Xu direction, Warm-White Qi is seen first, followed by Black Qi appearing and then vanishing; it does not reach the Hai position. This is Xin Metal failing to overlay Hai Water.
All the above constitute "Tuo Lin." It is not necessary for this to occur every year; whenever the Qi fails to arrive, indicating that the Heavenly Stem does not overlay the Earthly Branch, it signifies a year of misfortune.
