Luoli (Scrofula) refers to what the Classics call "tubercles." They may appear around the ears, extending to the cheeks and mandible, and downward connecting to the Quepen (Diquan, SI11) area; these are all called Luoli. They may also appear in the chest and its lateral aspects, extending downward to connect with both hypochondria; these are called Madao (Marine Knife). The Hand-Shaoyang and Foot-Shaoyang meridians govern these conditions. This meridian has abundant Qi but scarce Blood, so the masses are hard rather than soft, and the pus is white, thin, and resembles rice water. Treatment aims at clearing the clear pus. If Luoli occurs in other meridians, one should temporarily consult the Bronze Man acupuncture chart, identify the corresponding acupoints based on the affected meridian's pathway, and apply moxibustion. Medications should also be used according to the Classics. A single, small formation is called a tubercle; multiple linked formations are called Luoli; those with a surface shape resembling a clam are called Madao.
To treat Madao, use Liaoqiao Tang (Forsythia Decoction):
Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 2 jin), Qumai (Herba Siegesbeckiae, 1 jin), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang).
Grind the above into coarse powder. Take 1 liang, add two bowls of water, and decoct until one and a half bowls remain. Take after breakfast during the Si hour (9-11 AM). If the condition is on both sides of the neck, it belongs to the Shaoyang meridian. After taking the medicine for more than ten days, apply moxibustion (7 cones, total 14 moxa burns) to the Linqi (Zulinqi, GB41) acupoint. Do not stop taking the medicine; efficacy will be determined within sixty days. Another prescription increases the dose of Dahuang, omits Gancao, and adds Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 5 liang), Xionghuang (Realgar, 7 fen), and Binglang (Arecae Semen, 0.5 liang). Mix with warm water and take 3-5 qian.
To treat Luoli, use Wenwu Gao (Civil and Martial Paste), made from Sangshen (Mori Fructus).
Wenwushi (Black ripe Mori Fructus, 2 dou).
Extract the juice using a cloth bag, and boil it down into a thin paste in silver or ceramic vessels. Take one spoonful mixed with plain boiled water, three times daily.
The discussion states: The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine meridian is named "Hai Fei" (Fei refers to insects). In the *Liuyuan Zhengji Da Lun*, Yangming is also called "Si Sha Fu" (The Mansion of Killing Authority), as the Hand-Yangming corresponds to Metal. The Large Intestine is named Hai Fei, meaning Metal can harm the five types of worms. It is also called Si Sha Fu, meaning Metal governs killing. Given these two names, why would it generate worms internally? This is because the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) Ministerial Fire is excessive, capable of restraining the Yangming Metal, causing Wood to invade (reverse control). The *Neijing* states: "Invade means overcoming that which overcomes oneself." Wood governs the generation of the five worms. He Suhe said: "Qi primarily originates beside the Spleen. Paroxysmal pain in the Large Intestine is unbearable. Gradual slight diarrhea indicates heat in the Sanjiao. Do not arbitrarily establish regulations." This refers to excessive alcohol consumption and eating hot-natured foods, generating intense heat in the Spleen, thereby assisting the exuberance of Sanjiao Qi. Fire generates Earth (Spleen). At this point, one should drain the Sanjiao fire. Once the fire recedes, Metal Qi returns to restrain Wood. When Wood is restrained, the five worms do not generate, and the disease heals itself.
Cangzhu Zexie Wan (Atractylodes and Alisma Pill):
Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 4 liang, peeled), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 2 liang), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 2 liang), Diyü (Radix Sanguisorbae, 1 liang), Zaozi (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis, 2 liang, charred but retaining nature).
Grind into fine powder, make pills with steamed rice, size of Toosun seeds (Cinnamomi Fructus). Take thirty pills before meals, washed down with wine or rice drink.
Another prescription:
Chuanwu (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, processed), Guduan Shi (Ancient Hammered Stone, equal parts).
Take according to the previous pill method.
Washing Medicine:
Tianxianzi (Fructus Daturae Stramonii), Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae), Shujiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli), Manjingzi (Fructus Viticis Negundo), equal parts.
Decoct in water and wash the affected area.
Hei Dihuang Wan (Black Rehmannia Pill) is the sacred medicine for treating hemorrhoids. There is a prescription for it under the section on Deficiency and Damage.
