The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian originates at the outer canthus (Tongziliao, GB1), ascends to the vertex/corner of the head, descends behind the ear, follows the neck anterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, reaches the shoulder, then crosses posterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, and enters the supraclavicular fossa (Quepen). A branch enters the ear from behind the ear, emerges anterior to the ear, and reaches the posterior aspect of the outer canthus. Another branch diverges from the outer canthus, descends to Daying (LI17), joins the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, reaches the zygomatic region, descends below Jiache (ST6), travels down the neck to join the main trunk in the supraclavicular fossa; it then descends into the chest, pierces the diaphragm, connects with the Liver, and belongs to the Gallbladder. It follows the interior of the hypochondrium, emerges at the Qi Chong (Stomach 30) area, circles the pubic hair margin, and transversely enters the hip joint depression (Biyan). The straight branch descends from the supraclavicular fossa to the axilla, passes through the lateral chest and costal margin, descends to join the hip joint depression, then follows the lateral thigh, emerges at the lateral knee, descends anterior to the fibula, reaches the end of the fibular neck (Juegu), emerges anterior to the lateral malleolus, follows the dorsum of the foot, and enters between the second and third toes. A branch diverges from the dorsum of the foot, enters between the first and second toes, follows the medial side of the first metatarsal bone to its tip, returns to penetrate the nail bed, and emerges at the trichiasis (Sanmao).
When this meridian is disturbed, disorders include bitter taste in the mouth, frequent sighing, pain in the heart and hypochondrium with inability to turn the body, severe cases presenting with a dusty complexion, lack of luster in the body, and heat on the lateral aspect of the foot; this is termed Yang Jue (Yang Reversal).
This meridian primarily governs diseases of the bones, manifesting as headache, mandibular pain, pain at the outer canthus, swelling and pain in the supraclavicular fossa, axillary swelling, "horse knife" and "xia ying" (scrofula/lymphadenopathy), sweating with chills, malaria, and pain throughout the chest, hypochondrium, thigh, lateral knee, lower leg, fibular neck, lateral malleolus, and various joints, along with dysfunction of the second toe. These constitute the diseases associated with this meridian.
The above describes the circulation of Qi in the Gallbladder Meridian, which is the eleventh meridian. The axillary region is referred to as the hypochondrium. The area outside the Qugu bone is the pubic hair margin; the pulsating artery on both sides of the pubic hair margin is the Qi Chong point. Below the Jiegu bone is the Biyan, also known as the Bi Shu. Below the costal margin is the Ji Xiong (belonging to the Liver Meridian, specifically Zhangmen LR13). The fibula is the Fu Gu; the area above the lateral malleolus is Juegu; the dorsum of the foot is the Su; the bone behind the base of the great toe is the Qi Gu; and the hair behind the great toenail is Sanmao.
The Foot-Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian originates at Tongziliao (GB1) of the outer canthus, ascending via Tinghui (GB2) and Keren Zhu (Shangguan, GB4) to the head corner, following Han Yan, descending through Xuan Lou and Xuan Li, exiting laterally from Xuan Li along the ear, ascending to the hairline, reaching Qu Bin and Lv Gu, turning outward, descending behind the ear, following Tian Chong, Fu Bai, Qiaoyin, and Wang Gu. From Wang Gu, it turns outward, follows Ben Shen, passes Qu Cha, descends to Yang Bai, meets Jingming (BL1), ascends again from Jingming, following Lin Qi, Mu Chuang, Zheng Ying, Cheng Ling, Nao Kong, and Feng Chi, reaching the neck via Tian You, running anterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, descending to the shoulder, ascending along Jian Jing (GB21), crossing left and right to pass posterior to the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian, passing through Yifeng (TE17) in the temporal region behind the ear, entering the ear, passing Ting Gong (SI19), and diverging from the outer canthus (Tongziliao). This branch descends to Daying (LI17), joining the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian at the zygomatic region, descending below Jiache (ST6), traveling down the neck anterior to this meridian, merging with the branch that entered the supraclavicular fossa, descending outside Tianchi (Pericardium 17) in the chest, piercing the diaphragm, connecting with the Liver at Qimen (LR14), descending to the Riyue (GB24) region, and belonging to the Gallbladder. From the Gallbladder connection, it follows the interior of the hypochondrium past Zhangmen (LR13) to Qi Chong (ST30), circles the pubic hair margin, and transversely enters the Huantiao (GB30) point in the Biyan; the straight branch descends from the supraclavicular fossa to the axilla, following the chest through Yuan Ye, Zhe Jin, and Riyue, passing the costal margin, following Jingmen (GB25), Dai Mai (GB26), Wushu (GB27), Weidao (GB28), Juliao (GB29), entering Shangliao (BL31), Zhongliao (BL32), Changqiang (GV1), and descending, merging with the branch that entered the Biyan, then following the lateral thigh between the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, passing Zhongdu (GB33) and Yangguan (GB34), emerging at the lateral knee, reaching Yanglingquan (GB34), descending anterior to the fibula through Yangjiao (GB35), Waixiu (GB36), and Guangming (GB37), reaching the end of the fibular neck (Xuanzhong/Gallbladder 39), following Yangfu (GB38) and Xuanzhong (Gallbladder 39), emerging anterior to the lateral malleolus to Qiuxu (GB40), following the dorsum of the foot through Lin Qi (Gallbladder 41), Wuhui (Gallbladder 43), and Xiaxi (Gallbladder 44), ascending to the tip of the second toe, ending at Zuqiaoyin (Gallbladder 45). Its branch diverges from Lin Qi (Gallbladder 41) on the dorsum of the foot, enters the great toe, follows the medial side of the metatarsal bone, exits the tip of the great toe, penetrates the nail bed, emerges at the Sanmao, and connects with the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian.
Regarding clinical manifestations when these points are disturbed: bitter taste occurs due to the bitterness of bile juice; frequent sighing results from stagnant Gallbladder Qi; hypochondriac pain and other symptoms appear according to the meridian's pathway.
