(Note: Nasal discharge [Naolou], nasal disorders)
The head is the convergence point of all Yang meridians. The etiology is not singular; generally, it should be treated by categorizing into twelve types of syndromes. Zhu Danxi stated: Headache is mostly caused by phlegm; in severe cases, it is often due to fire.
Some cases can be treated with emesis, while others with purgation. If pain occurs in the eyebrows and orbits, it belongs to wind-heat and phlegm. There are cases of headache due to liver deficiency; upon seeing light, orbital pain occurs, and in severe cases, there is pain in the supraorbital ridge, inability to open the eyes, quietness during the day and exacerbation at night, which belongs to phlegm. Regarding "Head Wind" (Toufeng), the classics state: The condition of Shou Feng (Wind of the Head) involves excessive sweating on the head and face, aversion to cold, and should precede... [Text incomplete].
Caused by wind. Women suffer from Head Wind frequently because they do not wear scarves or caps to ward off wind and cold. Head Wind can be lateral or central, hot or windy, or due to blood deficiency. Lateral headache on the left belongs to wind and blood deficiency; on the right, it belongs to phlegm and heat. Dizziness (Touxuan) refers to blurred vision, darkness, and a sensation of spinning or falling. The presentation includes dizziness, closed eyes, deafness when turning the body, feeling as if standing on a boat or cart, and a desire to fall when rising. This results from extreme deficiency combined with cold invasion. Thus, wind causes sweating, cold causes pulling pain, summerheat causes vexation and stuffiness, and dampness causes heaviness and stagnation; these four climatic factors cause dizziness when taking advantage of deficiency. Alternatively, emotional depression generates phlegm and stirs up fire, ascending with Qi rebellion; this is dizziness caused by deficiency due to emotional factors. Excessive alcohol and sexual activity lead to kidney deficiency, failing to grasp Qi and return it to its source, causing Qi to rebel and rush upward; this is Qi deficiency causing dizziness. Vomiting blood, epistaxis, metrorrhagia, or postpartum blood loss lead to spleen deficiency failing to control Ying Qi, causing various forms of blood to wander recklessly outside their vessels; this is blood deficiency causing dizziness.
