Gualou Fruit (Trichosanthis Fructus) one piece (remove skin), Kansui Root (Kansui Radix) four liang, Cinnamon Twig (Cinnamomi Ramulus) four liang (remove bark), Ginseng Root (Ginseng Radix) four liang, Jujube (Zizyphi Fructus) twelve pieces (split open).
Take the above five herbs, add seven sheng of water, decoct to obtain three sheng, remove the dregs, and take one sheng warm. Do not administer if there is no hardness in the chest.
There are two formulas for Daxiexiong Tang (Major Downward Draining Chest Decoction); one drains pathogenic factors from the Middle and Lower Jiao, while this one drains pathogenic factors from the Upper and Middle Jiao. Gualou sinks phlegm in the chest, and Kansui sinks clear-transforming pathogens in the meridians.
Levisticum Seed (Lepidii Semen) half sheng (stir-fried), Apricot Seed (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) half sheng (remove skin and tips, stir-fry until black), Rhubarb (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) eight liang (remove skin), Mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas) half sheng.
Take the above four herbs, pound and sieve Rhubarb and Levisticum Seed into powder. Mix Apricot Seed and Mirabilite and grind them together until they resemble paste. Combine with the powder and form a pill the size of a bullet. Independently pound Kansui Root into fine powder, one qianbi. Add two he of white honey and two sheng of water. Decoct to obtain one sheng. Take all at once warm. Bowel movement will occur after one night. If it does not move, take another dose. The effect is achieved when bowel movements occur. Observe dietary restrictions as per general medication rules.
Daxiexiong Wan (Major Downward Draining Chest Pill) acts by descending from high positions, attacking all three Jiao simultaneously. In Jie Xiong (Chest Binding) presenting with stiffness of the neck and back, the pathogen occupies the high position of the Taiyang Meridian. Therefore, Levisticum Seed and Apricot Seed are used to sink pathogens in the Upper Jiao.
Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix) eight liang, Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix) three liang, Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma) half sheng, Fresh Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) five liang (sliced), Jujube (Zizyphi Fructus) twelve pieces (split open), White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba) three liang, Immature Bitter Orange (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) four pieces (roasted).
Take the above eight herbs, add twelve dou of water, decoct to obtain six sheng, remove dregs, and continue decocting. Take one sheng warm, three times a day.
Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) belongs to the purgative method. Previous chapters stated that Shaoyang syndrome should not be treated with purgation, yet here a purgative method is presented because heat pathogenic factors have come from Shaoyang and accumulated in Yangming.
Bupleurum Root (Bupleuri Radix) two liang sixteen zhu, Scutellaria Root (Scutellariae Radix) one liang, Ginseng Root (Ginseng Radix) one liang, Licorice Root (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) one liang (roasted), Fresh Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) one liang (sliced), Pinellia Tuber (Pinelliae Rhizoma) five pieces, Jujube (Zizyphi Fructus) four pieces.
Take the above eight herbs, add four sheng of water, decoct to obtain two sheng, remove dregs, and divide into two doses. Recovery is indicated by symptom resolution; if unresolved, prepare and take another dose.
Mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas) treats chronic heat causing stomach closure. If Shaoyang heat has entered the Stomach but tidal fever and hypochondriac fullness persist, the heat is in the Stomach, yet the syndrome has not left Shaoyang. Treatment still utilizes Bupleurum Root, but adds Mirabilite to cleanse Stomach heat. This allows the pathogen to exit outward via the pivot mechanism of Shaoyang, ensuring thorough cleansing inside and out, which constitutes the correct method. Zhang Xiju from Qiantang stated: Da Chaihu Tang plus Mirabilite should be used; this reasoning is also valid. I record it here for reference.
