Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 1 liang and 17 zhu (peeled), Shaoyao (White Peony Root) 1 liang and 6 zhu, Gancao (Licorice Root) 1 liang and 2 zhu (roasted), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 16 zhu (nodes removed), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed) 16 pieces.
The above seven ingredients are decocted with five sheng of water. First, boil Mahuang for one or two boils, remove the foam on the surface [decoction method], then add the remaining herbs, and decoct to obtain two sheng of liquid. Strain off the dregs [decoction method], and take warm.
The dosage of Guizhi is greater than standard, while that of Mahuang is smaller; this is a modified method of assisting diaphoresis by drinking hot congee. The Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is reduced to two-fourths of its original formula, and the Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is reduced to one-fourth of its original formula.
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 18 zhu (peeled), Shaoyao (White Peony Root) 18 zhu, Gancao (Licorice Root) 18 zhu, Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 1 liang and 2 zhu, Dazao (Jujube Fruit) four pieces (broken open), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 18 zhu.
The above seven ingredients are crushed [preparation method], decocted with five sheng of water. First, boil Mahuang for one or two boils, remove the foam on the surface [decoction method], then add the remaining herbs, and decoct to obtain two sheng of liquid. Strain off the dregs [decoction method], and take one sheng warm [administration method]. This formula should ideally be adjusted to drink one sheng of a combination of Yebiao Tang (Yuebi Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) [administration method]; now they are combined into one formula, named Guizhi Er Yuebi Yi Tang (Two Parts Cinnamon Twig and One Part Yuebi Decoction).
Guizhi Er Yuebi Yi Tang treats a faint pulse and absence of Yang syndrome. "Absence of Yang" refers to the loss of fluids in the Yang aspect; therefore, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is used at two-fourths of the original dosage to harmonize Ying and Wei, allowing the pulse to recover.
Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 4 liang, Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) 3 liang (nodes removed), Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) 2 liang (peeled), Baishao (White Peony Root) 2 liang, Gancao (Licorice Root) 2 liang (roasted), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger Rhizome) 3 liang (sliced).
The above seven ingredients are crushed [preparation method], decocted with one dou of water. First, boil Mahuang and Gegen until the volume decreases by two sheng, removing the foam [decoction method], then add the remaining herbs, and decoct to obtain three sheng of liquid. Strain off the dregs [decoction method], and take one sheng warm [administration method]. Cover the patient to induce a slight sweating [nursing method]; there is no need to drink hot congee. Rest and dietary precautions follow the methods and contraindications of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) is Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) with added Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and doubled Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), used to dispel excess in the Ying level, representing a slight modification of the methods of Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). Specifically, Gegen and Mahuang treat excess in Ying and Wei... then... those... meridians...
