[Tingli Dazao Xiefei Decoction]
Semen Lepidii Descurainiae (Tinglizi) [fried until yellow, pounded into pills the size of a bullet], Jujubae Fructus (Dazao) [12 pieces].
Take the above two ingredients. First, decoct the Jujubae Fructus in three sheng of water to obtain two sheng of liquid. Remove the dregs, add the Semen Lepidii Descurainiae, and decoct again to obtain one sheng of liquid. Take all at once.
Semen Lepidii Descurainiae drains water downward, which is contrary to the sweet nature of Jujubae Fructus. The subtlety lies in the fact that Jujubae Fructus is sweet and protects the middle qi during the draining process. Therefore, its sweetness is used as a carrier to guide Semen Lepidii Descurainiae upward, while its draining property is used to purge the lungs, acting like a boat or oar to carry the medicine.
[Qianjin Weijing Decoction]
Phragmitis Rhizoma (Weijing) [two jin], Coicis Semen (Yiyiren) [half a jin], Persicae Semen (Taoren) [50 seeds], Benincasae Semen (Gua Ban) [half a jin].
Take the above four ingredients. Decoct in ten dou of water. First, decoct Phragmitis Rhizoma to obtain five sheng of liquid, remove the dregs, then add the remaining herbs. Decoct further to obtain two sheng of liquid. Take one sheng per dose. After taking it again, pus-like material should be vomited.
"Wei" refers to the thick part of reeds; "Jing" refers to the stem. Inferring the author's intent, this formula targets diseases located above the diaphragm, using the method of inducing vomiting to expel pathogens. Lung abscess (Fei Yong) arises from the mixing of qi and blood, and the lack of distinction between Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi. Two ingredients cool the qi, and two ingredients promote blood circulation, clarifying the Ying and Wei qi. By following the pathological trend to induce upward expulsion, this is indeed the primary strategy. For the "Gua Ban," Luffae Fructus Retinervia (Siguazi) is preferred. Li Shizhen stated: The meridians of Luffa are interconnected, and its internal structure is linked, enabling it to unblock the meridians and organs of the human body, reduce swelling, resolve phlegm, treat various blood disorders, and has a synergistic relationship with Persicae Semen. Coicis Semen directs qi downward, while Phragmitis Rhizoma ascends. One ascends and one descends, agitating and promoting the movement of qi and blood. Thus, tissue that has not yet necrotized will not form pus, and already ruptured abscesses can be expelled through vomiting. Currently, tender Phragmitis Rhizome is often used; its cold nature clears heat. Benincasae Semen has an urgent tendency to descend. Combined with the two seeds, it becomes a moistening and purgative formula. Borrowed to treat lung abscess, its rationale is quite sound.
[Bentun Decoction]
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) [two liang], Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong) [two liang], Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui) [two liang], Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia) [four liang], Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) [two liang], Puerariae Radix (Shengge) [five liang], Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao) [two liang], Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) [four liang].
Take the above nine ingredients. Decoct in twenty dou of water to obtain five sheng of liquid. Take one sheng warm, three times a day and once at night.
"Ben" is synonymous with "Fen" (anger/urgency), commonly pronounced as "Ben"; "Tun" refers to the posterior orifice of a pig, or a young pig. This disease involves qi attacking upwards from the abdomen, similar to how a river pig thrusts its hindquarters in an attempt to retreat.
