Horse Fat (Fat from the horse's neck) Raw Mulch Ash (Ash made by charring mulch branches) Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, Ramulus Cinnamomi) White Wine
Apply horse fat to the side with muscle spasms and stiffness; mix cinnamon twig with white wine and apply it to the side with muscle flaccidity and weakness. Use a mulch wood hook to traction the face, then place raw mulch ash in a pit, with the depth of the pit adjusted to match the height of a sitting person.
The *Ling Shu* states: The facial paralysis occurring at the end of spring is true wind-stroke in northern regions. During the three months of spring, yang qi is clear and bright. When wind pathogen invades the human body, it cannot penetrate deeply. Therefore, external methods such as applying substances to harmonize yang and moisten dryness are used. If the wind pathogen attacks the left cheek, the mouth deviates to the right; if it attacks the right cheek, the mouth deviates to the left. On the unaffected side, stiff tendons pull the mouth out of position, and the skin suffers from numbness and bi-syndrome. Therefore, the sweet, pungent, soft, and slow nature of horse fat is used to massage the stiff side, moisten the blood vessels, and unblock the bi-obstruction. On the affected side, tendons are flaccid and loose, unable to contract, so the pungent and hot nature of cinnamon twig, combined with the meridian-activating property of wine, is quickly applied to the flaccid side to harmonize Ying and Wei Qi and unblock the blood collaterals. The mulch hook is used to traction the cheek. "Kan" refers to the depression between the cheeks. Raw mulch ash is used because "raw" implies vitality; fresh mulch branches are harvested and charred to obtain sharp potency and sufficient strength to open joint orifices and dispel wind-bi. The phrase "high and low equal to sitting" means that when placing the mulch ash in the pit, the thickness and level must be uniform, so that the ointment can warm the stiff cheek, allowing the mulch properties to enter the collaterals, blending with the horse fat to relax tendons and moisten bi-obstruction. "Three patting" refers to gently patting the area three times. Drinking fine wine helps move Qi upward since the disease is located above. Eating roasted meat assists Stomach Qi in ascending to the collaterals. As for burning needles and rapid acupuncture, let those who understand explain them.
Sheng Tie Luo Yin
Soak in clear water for one full day and night, grind and clarify, then drink the liquid. According to the *Jia Yi Jing*, Sheng Tie Luo is taken as a drink, administered after meals.
Sheng Tie Luo refers to raw iron fragments flying off during the initial hammering of smelted iron in furnaces, resembling moths, which have not been refined. It treats summer-heat pathogens acquired in summer. Since summer Qi corresponds to the Zang organs, and what is dreaded is... large tendons... Qi... therefore use... flower... The *Su Wen · Ping Re Bing Lun* also states: Withholding food cures the disease, indicating that grain Qi is also under prohibition. Perhaps using wheat food as a post-meal intake can calm Liver Yang; this should be preserved for scholars to consider.
