Xu Zhongguang treated a child with smallpox. After the tenth day, in the morning, the gums were ulcerated, and the outer cheeks were red and swollen. Externally, Yiyang San (Suppress Yang Powder) was mixed with scallion juice and wine mash for application, changed once daily, without paper sealing. Internally, Viola yedoensis Herb (Zihua Diding), Pseudostellariae Radix (Huafen), Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuan Shen), Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Shancigu), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu), Forsythiae Fructus (Qiao), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang), Arctii Fructus (Bang), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Xiong), Platycodonis Radix (Jie), Coptidis Rhizoma (Lian), Scutellariae Radix (Qin), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Gui), and Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shao) were administered. Initially, Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Yinjinhua) one liang was decocted in water for oral administration, after which the cheek swelling and oral ulcers gradually subsided. Over a month later, nocturnal fever suddenly occurred, and a nodule appeared under the left cheek, the size of a plum, white in color, and painful upon pressure. Externally, Borax (Pengsha) 1.5 qian, Chalcanthum (Danfan) 0.5 qian, and Moschus (Shexiang) 0.5 fen were evenly mixed with distilled liquor and applied with a new brush. Internally, Scutellariae Radix (Qin), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qiang), Forsythiae Fructus (Qiao), Arctii Fructus (Bang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shao), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuan Shen), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus (Beimu), Gentianae Radix (Danchao), and Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi) were given. Additionally, Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao) one liang was decocted for oral administration. After four or five doses, the patient recovered.
Xu Zhongguang treated another smallpox case where abdominal pain occurred before the eruption was complete, accompanied by belching with a milky odor, acid regurgitation, and sour-smelling stool, indicating food stagnation. The patient recovered after two doses of Baohe Wan (Preserve Harmony Pill).
In another case, during the swelling stage of smallpox, the pus formation was difficult, accompanied by cold limbs and abdominal pain. This was a blood-heat syndrome exacerbated by the overuse of cold-natured medicines. Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) added with Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Paojiang) cured the patient in one dose.
In a post-smallpox case of abdominal pain due to food injury, the root cause was deficiency of middle-jiao qi, requiring simultaneous tonification and purging. Xiangsha Baopi Wan (Aucklandia and Amomum Spleen-Preserving Pill) combined with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) led to recovery through regulation.
In another post-smallpox case, the patient had a good appetite and easy digestion but suffered from abdominal pain. This indicated stomach heat causing frequent hunger, while spleen weakness failed to digest accumulated stagnation, leading to pain. Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang), and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) cured the condition.
In a case where smallpox pustules were full but healing was delayed, accompanied by abdominal distension, fever, facial redness, worsening in the afternoon, and non-tender abdomen upon pressure, this was attributed to spleen deficiency and blood insufficiency. Guishao Liujunzi Tang (Angelica and Paeonia Six-Gentlemen Decoction) added with Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Jujubae Fructus (Zao), and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Jiang) cured the patient after several doses.
Fe Jianzhong treated the daughter of Minister Qian Quan. She usually suffered from internal heat and emaciation. In midsummer, she contracted smallpox with intense heat, severe abdominal pain preventing turning over, extremely foul breath, and dense, purple, stagnant eruptions that were not fine. Fortunately, although the initial toxin was malignant, it had no fixed location. Da Huang (Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma) 4 qian, Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) 7 qian, Rehmanniae Radix Recens (Shengdi) 6 qian, and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) 1 qian were used, assisted by Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Peach Kernel (Taoren), Viola yedoensis Herb (Diding), Carthami Flos (Honghua), and Pheretima (Dilong). Just before administration, about one cup of pig tail paste was mixed in. By the sixth day, the eruption color became fuller, redder, and turned white; abdominal pain eased slightly, but other symptoms remained unchanged, so the same formula continued. By the ninth day, the pus was very abundant but abdominal pain intensified, heat was more severe, eyelids closed, corners of eyes bled, delirium occurred, and there was insomnia and anorexia. Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao) was added to the previous formula, with doubled amounts of large Rehmanniae Radix Recens (D Shengdi) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), and reduced pig tail blood. Just before administration, Huadu Dan (Resolve Toxin Pill) was mixed with 1 fen of Mus Bovis Calculus (Niuhuang) and 2 fen of Cinnabar (Zhusha). On the twelfth day, the head and face emitted a foul odor; only three bowls of porridge were consumed daily, yet abdominal pain and fever persisted. By the eighteenth day, significant improvement began. The same formula yielded results throughout. There are many such successful cases; this one is cited to illustrate the rest.
