Place the herbs in a tin pot, pour in two to three bowls of boiling water, then place the pot inside a steaming vessel filled with water. Boil for more than ten cycles until the medicinal flavors are fully extracted. Drink continuously until the pain ceases after consuming five to seven pots. For external use, apply Green Plaster (Lü Gao Yao): Take one jin and five liang of rosin (Song Xiang) and five jin of distilled liquor (Shao Jiu). Simmer over low heat until dry. Pour into cold water and knead by hand into one hundred pine-seed-shaped pellets to remove moisture from water and alcohol. Use twenty-one whole scorpions (Quan Xie), twenty centipedes (Wu Gong), five qian of true toad venom (Zhen Chan Su), three qian each of frankincense (Ru Xiang) and myrrh (Mo Yao), and eight qian of verdigris (Tong Lv). Grind each ingredient separately into fine powder. To prepare, melt the rosin, add a small amount of sesame oil, test the consistency to form the plaster base, and once the rosin cools and solidifies, mix in the fine powders evenly. Store in a porcelain jar, soften by heating in a water bath, and spread onto dressing. Change once daily; each application removes a layer of necrotic tissue, promoting granulation tissue growth resembling pomegranate seeds, with wound closure achieved in twenty days. The merit of this plaster lies in its ability to promote even, flat healing, unlike other plasters that heal inward from the periphery to a bean-sized opening, which is difficult to close. It treats all types of severe toxic sores caused by karmic retribution or other etiologies. (Both internal and external treatments demonstrate ingenious design.)
Plaster Formula for Treating Back Carbuncle (Fa Bei): Dripping frankincense (Di Ru Xiang), wrapped in bamboo leaves, heated red-hot, pressed on brick to remove oil, four liang; purified myrrh (Jing Mo Yao) four liang, processed similarly; white catechu (Bai Se Er Cha), high-quality cinnabar (Shang Hao Yin Zhu), fresh red dragon's blood resin (Xian Hong Xue Jie), Hangzhou litharge powder (Hang Zhou Ding Fen), and high-quality red lead (Shang Hao Huang Dan), each four liang; high-quality verdigris (Shang Hao Tong Lv) three qian. All ingredients must be ground until no residue remains, sifted into extremely fine powder, mixed uniformly, and stored tightly sealed in a porcelain bottle. Before use, cut a piece of double-layered oiled paper according to the lesion size, prick numerous small holes with a needle. Apply five qian of powder per sheet, mixed with sesame oil, spread on the paper. Cover with another sheet of oiled paper, sew the edges together with thread, and apply to the affected area. This immediately relieves pain, resolves necrosis, and promotes new tissue growth. After three days, remove the plaster, wash the lesion with scallion decoction, dry with soft silk, flip the plaster, prick holes as before, and reapply. For patients without excess heat (cold constitution), internally administer Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Ingredients Tonifying Decoction). For those with heat signs, remove Cinnamon Twig (Rou Gui), Ginger (Sheng Jiang), and Jujube (Da Zao), and supplement with dietary nourishment; efficacy is assured.
Formula for Early Stage of Back Carbuncle: Polygala root meat (Yuan Zhi Rou), boiled in licorice juice, heartwood removed, five qian; licorice root (Gan Cao) one qian and five fen; fresh chrysanthemum leaves and stems (Xian Gan Ju Hua Ye) one liang; Fritillaria bulb (Bei Mu) three qian; fresh Honeysuckle vine (Xian Ren Dong Teng) five qian; Viola yedoensis (Zi Hua Di Ding) five qian; Forsythia fruit (Lian Qiao) one qian; Bletilla rhizome (Bai Ji) three qian.
Another Formula: Tuoli Baidu San (Supporting Interior and Resolving Toxicity Powder): Astragalus root (Mian Huang Qi), stir-fried with salt water, three qian, five qian, eight qian, or one liang; water-processed licorice joint (Shui Zhi Gan Cao Jie) two qian,可增加至 four or five qian; Red Peony Root (Chi Shao) two qian; Honeysuckle flower (Jin Yin Hua) three qian; Rubia cordifolia root (Qian Cao), preferably from Jiangxi, thin as lamp wick, three qian; Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu) five qian; Silkworm infected with Beauveria (Bai Jiang Can), roasted and ground, six fen; Bletilla rhizome (Bai Ji) two qian and five fen; Gleditsia sinensis thorn (Zao Jiao Ci) one qian; Fritillaria bulb (Bei Mu) two qian; Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen) three qian; Pangolin scale (Chuan Shan Jia), soil-roasted and ground, one qian; Arctium fruit (Shu Niu Zi), roasted and ground, one qian; Cicada slough (Chan Tui), wings and feet removed, one qian. First, decoct five liang of Prunella vulgaris (Xia Ku Cao) in five large bowls of river water until reduced to three bowls. Add the aforementioned herbs and decoct until one bowl remains. Take at any time. For Yin syndromes, remove the last five ingredients and add Ginseng (Ren Shen) three qian and Ophiopogon tuber (Mai Dong) five qian.
Another Formula for Post-Ulceration: Ginseng (Ren Shen) three qian; Ophiopogon tuber (Mai Dong) five qian; Astragalus root (Mian Huang Qi), honey-roasted, five qian or one liang; Roasted licorice root (Zhi Gan Cao) two qian; Schisandra berry (Wu Wei Zi), mixed with honey and steamed, one qian; White Peony Root (Bai Shao), wine-stir-fried, three qian; Honeysuckle flower (Jin Yin Hua) three qian; Chinese yam (Shan Yao), stir-fried, three qian. Decoct in water and take orally. Avoid Atractylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu) during ulcerative stage, and avoid Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui) during tumorous stage. (From *Guang Biji*)
