Hao Weng, a physician in Boling renowned for his divine skills, treated a pregnant woman who had lost her voice and could not speak. Hao said, "As the fetus grows, it obstructs the meridians, causing aphonia; once the child is born and the meridians clear, speech will naturally return." (From *Ye Xinglin's Gynecology*.)
Xiao Gengliu stated: "*Neijing·Daqi Lun* classifies aphonia caused by insufficiency of uterine essence as a fatal condition, not a survivable one, which serves as verification. Aphonia at nine months of pregnancy is not due to insufficiency of uterine essence; therefore, speech will resume after ten months (at term)."
Huang Jinfang treated the wife of Shi Huiwen, whose constitution was characterized by Yin deficiency and weak Fire. Yin deficiency allows deficient Fire to wander upward, resulting in sore throat and rebellious Qi; weak Fire leads to incomplete digestion of food, often accompanied by internal binding of deficient Fire.
Slightly using *Dihuang* (Rehmanniae Radix) to nourish Yin causes further stagnation of food; slightly using *Danggui* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) to tonify Blood causes Fire to ascend with its acrid nature, generating heat; slightly using *Shashen* (Glehniae Radix) and *Yuanshen* (Scrophulariae Radix) to clear the throat makes Qi feel suddenly descend, but causes blurred vision; slightly using *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix) and *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to tonify Qi brightens the eyes but makes Qi feel urgent, causing chest fullness and pain; slightly using herbs that regulate Qi and suppress Liver causes heaviness and bearing-down sensation in the waist and kidneys, and abdominal pain with urge to defecate. When occasionally contracting wind-cold, slight use of exterior-releasing herbs causes steaming heat and rebellious Qi following the Fire. At this time, she was also pregnant, making regulation difficult. Huang's pulse diagnosis revealed all six pulses were wiry and slightly rapid, especially prominent at the Guan positions. Symptoms included chest fullness, panting, sore throat, swollen feet, blurred vision, and worsened chest fullness after eating. She was nine months pregnant, nearing term. Thus, he used his self-formulated *Heqi Antai Yin* (Harmonizing Qi and Calming Fetus Decoction), composed of *Fuling* (Poria), *Guangpi* (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), stir-fried *Baishao* (Paeoniae Radix Alba), *Danpi* (Moutan Cortex), *Dafumao* (Arecae Pericarpium), stir-fried *Maidong* (Ophiopogonis Tuber), *Renshen* (Ginseng Radix), *Baizhu* (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and *Suye* (Perillae Folium). It was decocted strongly and taken warm. The condition gradually improved with the medication.
Sun Wen Yuan treated the wife of Cheng Yuwu, who was seven months pregnant when her breasts suddenly became red, swollen, and painful, accompanied by alternating chills and fever, indicating impending development of *Neichui* (Internal Blowing, a type of mastitis). He used four qian of *Gualu* (Trichosanthis Fructus) as the sovereign herb, two qian of *Dangguiwei* (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail) as the minister herb, one qian and two fen each of *Gancao Jie* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma cum Nodo), *Pugongying* (Taraxaci Herba), *Beimu* (Fritillariae Bulbus), and *Lianqiao* (Forsythiae Fructus) as the assistant herbs, eight fen each of *Qingpi* (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) and *Chaihu* (Bupleuri Radix), and five slices of *Juye* (Citri Reticulatae Folium) as the guide herb. After two doses, the illness was cured. This formula has countless verified cases. Women suffering from anger and depression often have liver meridian involvement. *Gualu* and *Gancao* are agents that soothe the Liver; *Beimu* opens stagnation; *Lianqiao* and *Pugongying* resolve toxicity; *Chaihu* and *Qingpi* regulate Qi; *Juye* guides the medicine into the meridian; *Danggui* invigorates blood. With blood circulation restored and Qi regulated, toxicity resolved and heat dispersed, swelling and pain dissipate. If suppuration is imminent, *Baizhi* (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) can be added.
*Yixue Gangmu* records the *Zaojiao San* (Gleditsia Sinensis Powder) for treating women's *Chuilu* (Blown Milk/Mastitis), with a rhyme stating: "How to treat blown milk in women? Burn *Zaojiao* to ash and mix with clam powder; mix with a cup of hot wine for a dose of one character, rub away quickly and laugh happily."
