Blood, does not flow smoothly (referring to poor blood circulation or persistent bleeding). Later, palpitations (Xin Jing, 心悸) and insomnia occurred, along with loss of appetite, trismus (jaw stiffness), headache and eye pain due to blood stasis, aversion to cold, and fever. This was because pus was retained internally, resembling tetanus (Po Shang Feng, 破伤风). Therefore, bi-stone therapy (Bian Shi, 砭石) was used to puncture and drain the pus, leading to immediate relief. Fifty doses of Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Root), and Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) were administered, after which the aforementioned symptoms gradually improved. Subsequently, the previous herbs combined with Dushen Tang (Single Ginseng Decoction) were used, causing the blood stasis to suppurate and discharge. Later, due to overexertion, night sweats during sleep recurred. Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) plus Mai Dong, Wu Wei Zi, and Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root) cured the condition. Later, distension and stuffiness in the jaw, along with redness of the face and eyes, appeared again, resembling tetanus. It was still considered a deficiency syndrome, and treatment with Bazhen Tang and other herbs brought peace.
A person who suffered from beating presented with abdominal distension, panting, thirst, alternating chills and fever, and ulceration of the buttocks and thighs. The necrotic flesh mixed with dead tissue, resembling a skin bag filled with paste. Tongjian (Child's Urine) was used to decoct Siwu Tang (Four-Substance Decoction), Tao Ren (Peach Kernel), Hong Hua (Carthamus Flower), Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Mai Dong, and Hua Fen (Trichosanthes Root). The symptoms subsided instantly. However, the patient applied black sheepskin to the wound, which exacerbated the condition. Later, copious amounts of pus and blood were drained via bi-stone therapy. The patient's breath was faint, lips moved slightly, jaw was tight, and the affected area was dark purple. Some suggested using medicine for tetanus. I said: "This is a complication due to Qi and Blood deficiency." Shen (Ginseng), [missing character], Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Gui (Angelica Sinensis), and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) were used, along with Dushen Tang and human milk. After the Yuan Qi (Original Qi) recovered, all symptoms resolved. Finally, Shiquan Dabu Tang (Perfect Golden Great Tonifying Decoction) was used for regulation, leading to recovery. If pus and blood stasis are retained internally, acupuncture should be employed. If, after ulceration, trismus and enuresis occur, resembling tetanus, it indicates extreme depletion of Qi and Blood; urgent use of strong tonifying agents is required. If the patient has excessive phlegm and suffers from wind syndromes, clearing phlegm and reducing fire is appropriate. If wind-like symptoms arise from anger, clearing the Liver and reducing fire is indicated. If sexual indiscretion leads to these symptoms suddenly, it is due to insufficiency of Kidney Water and blazing Heart Fire; nourishing Yin and tonifying Qi and Blood is the primary approach. Misdiagnosing this as a wind syndrome will result in death.
Another person suffered internal ulceration after beating. Acupuncture drained three to five bowls of pus. Immediately afterward, strong tonifying agents were administered. The next day, high fever, sweating with cold feet, trismus, and opisthotonos (arching of the back) occurred. The crowd wanted to administer dispersing and releasing exterior agents. I said: "This is a transformation into spasm due to extreme Qi and Blood deficiency. Treating it as a wind syndrome would be a mistake." Shiquan Dabu Tang and similar herbs cured the condition. This type of syndrome may result from excessive sweating or purging in Cold Damage (Shang Han), or from Qi and Blood depletion in postpartum women or patients with ulcers. Proper management involves regulating and tonifying Qi and Blood. Using harsh draining agents often leads to untreatable conditions.
A person whose wound had not healed for over two months after beating developed spasms and bleeding from the wound due to anger. This was caused by anger stirring up Liver Fire. Chai Hu, Huang Qin, Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Jie Geng (Platycodon Root), Tian Ma (Gastrodia Rhizome), Gou Teng (Uncaria Ramulus), and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) were used, resulting in immediate recovery. Liu Zongnong stated: Spasms may arise from heat due to Wind-Fire, from emotional anger, or from internal excess of Damp-Heat obstructing collaterals with phlegm-saliva. Treatment should focus on tonifying deficiency, reducing fire, strengthening Earth to pacify Wood, and clearing phlegm while removing dampness.
A man with a beating wound where blood stasis did not decompose was treated with strong tonifying agents until decomposition occurred, followed by interior-supplementing and Spleen-strengthening herbs to promote healing.
A man whose beating wound was invaded by Wind experienced trismus. One dose of Yuzhen San (Jade True Powder) provided slight relief, and a second dose led to stability.
Yuan San from Xiaoqu suffered wounds on both hypochondriac regions due to a home invasion by bandits. The sores persisted for years with continuous oozing of thick fluid. Drinking cold water caused coldness in the sores, and water seeped out, extending into eczema. He sought treatment. Zhang said: "You have two to three sheng of green water and several handfuls of saliva in your chest/diaphragm." Yuan asked why. Zhang replied: "When robbed, shock Qi entered the abdomen. Shock injures the Gallbladder, affecting the Shaoyang Meridian. Both hypochondriac regions belong to the Shaoyang channel. This is pathogenic invasion of the Jia Wood of the Gallbladder. Jia Wood is green, hence the green water. Shaoyang resides in the Middle Jiao like fermentation, harboring shock-phlegm there. Cold water swallowed is blocked by shock-phlegm; water follows the meridian and enters the sore laterally. Thus, drinking water causes fluid to exit the sore." Consequently, cold phlegm surged upward, sweat flowed like water, followed by the discharge of green water, totaling two to three sheng. The scabs dried overnight. Truly remarkable.
Wang Jing, having served Emperor Gaozong poorly, was whipped on the back in the city and exiled. Upon returning, he claimed he had never been beaten, showing his back to someone, which was smooth and unscarred. Initially, he did not understand how this happened. Later, hearing other physicians say that whipping always leaves scars, but if gold foil is applied immediately upon injury, the scars disappear instantly, he realized it was due to the metal nature restraining the wood nature.
