(Attached: Turbid Pathogen Syndrome)
Xu Zhongguang treated a child with smallpox. The pustules were purple and failed to rise and swell, indicating excessive pathogenic heat and stagnation. He administered Du Sheng San (Solely Holy Powder) mixed with wine decocted from Zicao (Arnebiae Radix), Honghua (Carthami Flos), and Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum), followed by Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). The skin turned ruddy, the pustules rose and swelled, and the patient recovered.
Another child presented with dense, purple, and sluggish smallpox lesions on the sixth day, which were flat, depressed, and failed to rise. The child suffered from restlessness and confusion, also due to excessive pathogenic heat and stagnation. However, it was deemed treatable if the distinct "pearl" formation could be observed. Renzhonghuang (Human Middle Yellow) was administered at 3 fen per dose, mixed with wine. After two doses, the color gradually became ruddy and vibrant. Subsequently, Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) was modified with Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) and Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum). The lesions opened, protruded, and swelled fully, leading to recovery.
In another case of severe blood-heat in smallpox, initial treatment consisted solely of cooling the blood and detoxifying. The patient consumed over 2 liang of Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) and 5 qian of Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) per dose for five doses. By the tenth day, a small amount of Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), 3 fen, was used to support the filling of the pustules. After the twelfth day, as the pus was clear and the scabs thin, supportive tonifying herbs were added, including seven silkworm pupae within cocoons and one he of Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Var. Glutinosa). When thirsty, the child drank a decoction of Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Var. Glutinosa), and silkworm cocoons.
Later, several water blisters appeared, and the pus/scabs became dark and stagnant, with ulceration spreading over the body. Treatment with Fuling (Poria), Yiren (Coicis Semen), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Guipi (Phellodendri Cortex), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus), Lianrou (Nelumbinis Semen), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica) led to recovery. (Excessive use of cold-clearing herbs depleted the Yuan Qi, preventing adequate pus formation. Therefore, skilled practitioners prepare for later stages of pus induction while clearing heat, avoiding disjointed treatment.)
Wan Shiyong stated: In the spring of Gengshen year, my ten-year-old son contracted smallpox. A servant residing in Lu village rushed back upon hearing the news. I examined him and found the condition not urgent; however, greasy fried foods nearby could not be avoided. Heo Yuxi (Zeng Shirong) was consulted. On the seventh day, the lesions were swollen and lustrous. Accidentally exposed to foul odors from a latrine, the lesions turned dark, and the child became comatose and terrified. Yuxi said, "Do not worry. I have herbs to remove turbidity; administration will ensure safety." Within a few days, it proved true, and the child was reborn. When asked about the prescription, he replied, "Zhonghe Tang (Harmonizing Decoction), which is essentially Shiqi San (Ten Wonders Powder), containing Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Tanshen (Santalum Album Lignum), etc., with no other special tricks."
