Miao’s Secret Formula for Treating Water Poisoning.
Harvest duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza), dry it in the sun, and administer one *cun* cube (a traditional measure of volume) with wine. Discontinue when cured. It is also said that in water poisoning, coldness of the fingers and toes indicates this condition. If warm, it is not this disease. The coldness may extend one *cun* or reach the fingertips; if it does not exceed one *cun* past the elbows or knees, it is a mild case; reaching the elbows or knees indicates a severe case.
Ge’s view: Water poisoning affecting humans is also called "Zhong Xi" (Stream Poisoning), "Zhong Sa", or "Water Disease". It resembles the "She Gong" (an aquatic toxic insect) but has no physical form. Its diagnostic method is as follows:
Initially, there is aversion to cold, slight headache, pain upon focusing vision, mental restlessness and oppression, trembling of the four limbs, and stiffness of bone joints. The sinews are tense, there is a desire to sleep, clarity in the morning worsens in the evening. The hands become cold. After three days, sores appear on the lower body, eaten by insects, without pain, itching, or coldness. One realizes this only upon seeing them; if not treated immediately, after six or seven days, the lower part becomes purulent and ulcerated, insects devour the five Zang organs, leading to extreme heat, vexation, and toxicity. Uncontrollable diarrhea occurs. By the eighth or ninth day, even excellent physicians cannot cure it. When feeling urgent, one must carefully examine the lower body. If there are sores, those red like cut meat indicate Yang Du (Yang Toxin), which is most critical. Those resembling the teeth of a conch fish indicate Yin Du (Yin Toxin), which is slightly less urgent but still fatal. Within twenty days. To confirm if it is water poisoning, boil several sheng (a unit of volume) of water, add five cun of small garlic. Crush and throw into the water; do not let it be too hot, as heat reduces efficacy. Squeeze out the dregs, and bathe when the temperature is suitable. If the body develops spots or patterns, and there are no other symptoms, treat it as another disease.
Formulas for Treating Water Poisoning.
Take plum leaves or peach leaves, crush them, and squeeze out about three sheng of juice. Dilute with a little water and drink. Miao says, if children cannot drink it, apply the juice to the nipple for them to suck.
Another formula: Take Chang Si Cao (Plantain, *Plantago asiatica*), crush and squeeze out the juice, drink one or two sheng. Also soak cotton in the juice and insert it into the lower orifice, three times a day, until cured.
Another formula: Crush Indigofera tinctoria (Lan Qing, 蓝靛) to extract juice, mix with a little water, and apply to the entire body, including head and face, ensuring full coverage.
Another formula: Take a handful of pear leaves, crush thoroughly, mix with one cup of wine, squeeze out the juice, and drink. No more than three doses.
Another formula: Take roots and rhizomes of Duchesnea indica (Snake Berry Root, 蛇莓草根), crush into powder, and take orally. Also insert into the lower orifice, or drink one to two sheng of juice. Use regularly in summer. Before bathing in water, throw a small amount of powder into the flowing water to ward off fear. It also repels She Gong at home; even when bathing in stored water, adding a small amount of powder is highly recommended.
In the counties of Dongxian, stream poisoning is ubiquitous, occurring in spring. Like Shang Han (Cold Damage), it is called "Xi Wen" (Stream Fever). It is not necessarily caused by She Gong, but patients suffer from sores and dysentery. If chills, fever, vexation, and pain persist unresolved, death ensues. Physicians use medicines similar to those for Shang Han and Wen Ji (Warm Diseases), applying single prescriptions.
Burn roots of Eleutherococcus senticosus (Wu Jia Gen, 五加皮) into powder, drink with wine or fermented rice liquid. Juice of Elsholtzia splendens (Jing Ye, 荆芥叶) is better; kept secret by Qian Jin Fang.
Another formula: Secretly collect Polygonum hydropiper (Liao, 蓼), crush and squeeze juice, drink one or two he (a small unit), and apply to the whole body for full coverage.
Take a handful of stems of Achyranthes bidentata (Niu Xi, 牛膝), soak in one cup of water and wine mixture. Squeeze out the juice and drink, three times a day. Male Niu Xi with purple stems is authentic.
If sores appear on the lower body and have already ulcerated/perforated:
Cook one sheng of broomcorn millet (Shu Mi, 秫米) and five sheng of salt in one dan (a large unit) of water until porridge-like. Sit in it until cured.
Another formula: Take peach bark and leaves, crush thoroughly, soak in water until thick, strain. Pour into a basin and sit in it; insects will emerge.
Another formula: Burn Gleditsia sinensis (Zao Jia, 皂荚) into powder, wrap in cotton, and insert into the lower orifice; this is also good. Additionally, take one *cun* cube of Paeonia suffruticosa (Mu Dan Pi, 牡丹皮) powder, three times a day.
