难产等类。治者滋其营,益其气,使子母精神接续,营运得力;

The classic states: If the mechanism of life ceases to operate for even a single breath, the pivot of vitality will be exhausted; if continuity is interrupted by even the slightest degree, a chasm as vast as heaven and earth will emerge. This refers to the continuous circulation of Qi and Blood throughout the body without interruption. Therefore, during pregnancy, the fetus resides in the abdomen, and the mother and child share a unified flow of Qi, relying entirely on amniotic fluid (Jiang Shui) for nourishment. After ten months are completed, the fetus's form and spirit are fully developed, and its Qi and Blood are complete. Suddenly, like waking from a dream, it naturally seeks an exit to be born. Once the fetus leaves the uterus, the mother and child become separate entities with distinct respiration. How can it remain confined inside for long, causing the Qi and Blood to cease their operation and continuity? Thus, childbirth is likened to a ripe fruit falling from its stem, possessing a natural tendency to separate. How could one use early induction drugs to go against this nature? Induction drugs are originally intended for cases of difficult labor caused by improper care and support, used only as a last resort. If the fetus is strong, birth will be easy along with the amniotic fluid; why use drugs for induction? If the fetus is weak, movement may be slow and delayed, leading to exhaustion, drying up of amniotic fluid, blockage by blood stasis preventing descent, transverse or breech presentation, fetal death, and other types of dystocia. The practitioner should nourish the Ying (Nutritive) level, benefit the Yuan Qi (Original Qi), ensuring the connection of maternal and fetal spirit and effective operation; warm the meridians, open obstructions, ensuring the birth canal is unobstructed so the fetus can turn and descend easily. With the assistance of an experienced and steady midwife carefully attending outside, safety for both mother and child can be achieved. One must not exert force too early, wasting spirit and energy, nor use harsh drugs for induction, which would instead damage Qi and Blood. One must not blindly trust talismanic waters; moreover, unless these are genuine transmissions, they are unlikely to be effective. Furthermore, blood coagulates when exposed to cold; if blood coagulates, the fetus will also stagnate. How can one expect rapid birth then?
The field of obstetrics relies entirely on the functioning of Qi and Blood. Without medicines that tonify spirit, how can one hope to succeed in pregnancy and childbirth? Merely damaging the harmony of Qi and Blood will instead lead to postpartum diseases. Adding Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) greatly tonifies Yuan Qi, aids spirit, and generates fluids; taking it at the time of labor facilitates birth. Similarly, Cuisheng Wanquan Tang (Labor-Inducing Ten-Thousand-Safety Decoction) is meticulously formulated to tonify, connect, open, and guide, regulating ascending/descending and warming/moving. It is highly beneficial for inducing labor at delivery and well-prepared for postpartum care, hence named "Ten-Thousand-Safety." Below are various labor-inducing formulas for selection. For cases of transverse or breech presentation, manual techniques described in "Linchan Xuzhi" (Notes on Labor Preparation) should be employed first. However, fearing that people may not skillfully apply manual techniques, leading to prolonged exhaustion and difficulty in birth, one may have to rely on medicinal power to assist Qi, Blood, and spirit, helping the fetus turn and be born quickly. Zhu Danxi used Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) to treat retained dead fetus and for induction, achieving very rapid results. I have personally used Taichan Jindan (Fetal Production Golden Pill) for induction, successfully expelling dead fetuses. Cuisheng Tang (Labor-Inducing Decoction) is also very stable and effective.
Dushen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) (With Commentary). This is the primary formula for labor induction.
Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma): 2-3 qian or 4-5 qian.
Commentary: Ren Shen is indeed a wonderful product for labor induction. However, if used improperly, errors often occur unnoticed. If administered before the onset of labor pains, when the fetus first turns position causing abdominal pain, people who do not understand this principle may mistakenly believe labor is imminent and brew Ginseng Decoction to boost strength, which is premature. If the mother has chronic Qi and Blood deficiency, it is beneficial and harmless. But if used for a robust woman whose dystocia is not due to deficiency, it may consolidate fetal Qi, forcing it upward to the chest, causing distension and inability to descend, resulting in dystocia. If labor pains have already started, with lower back soreness, abdominal pain, rectal tenesmus, and visual disturbances, just as the fetus is about to emerge, administering Ginseng Decoction and drinking it all at once is too late and hasty. After birth, when expelling lochia is necessary, the potent effect of Ginseng may cause blood stasis to congeal and fail to move, potentially leading to adverse effects such as Qi rushing to the heart. Some use up to 1 liang, which requires extreme caution. Therefore, ancients rarely used Ren Shen for postpartum conditions unless urgent, and often combined it with Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui, implying deep wisdom. I suggest preparing high-quality Ren Shen (4-5 qian) for labor. If the mother is young and vigorous with smooth labor, Ginseng Decoction is unnecessary. For middle-aged mothers with multiple births, chronic weakness, or difficult labor lasting days, or those who have missed the pain phase or exerted themselves excessively leading to fatigue and lack of strength to push, using 2-3 qian of Ren Shen decocted will facilitate birth. For ordinary pregnancies where labor might be difficult, pre-administering 2-3 qian of Ren Shen decocted and kept warm in hot water allows the mother to sip two or three mouthfuls when membranes rupture, pausing, then sipping more frequently and slowly, merely to aid strength for induction. Stop after birth; do not consume excessive amounts to avoid fault. Alternatively, holding a piece of high-quality Ren Shen in the mouth to generate fluids and aid Qi is also excellent. For transverse or breech presentations, manual techniques should be used first, followed by Ginseng Decoction to assist. Since Ren Shen tonifies Qi and lifts, it prevents maternal exhaustion and helps the fetus elevate and turn into a normal position, facilitating birth.
Cuisheng Wanquan Tang (Labor-Inducing Ten-Thousand-Safety Decoction) (With Commentary.)
Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma): 3-5 qian, greatly tonifying Yuan Qi as Sovereign.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix): 3 qian, greatly tonifying Ying Blood as Minister, remove radicle.
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma): 1 qian, enters Liver to relieve stagnation; its slight lifting property enhances the efficacy of descending herbs.
Tao Ren (Persicae Semen): 13 kernels, keep skin and tips, crush. Bitter removes old stasis, sweet generates new blood, slippery promotes downward movement.
Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma): 1 qian, warmth circulates blood; stir-fried until dark yellow to direct downward and restrain upward rising.
Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata): 6 fen, moderates herb properties, allowing Middle Jiao to receive tonification without immediate downward collapse.
Niu Xi Sui (Achyranthis Bidentatae Caulis): 2 qian, descends and traverses the twelve meridians, clearing congestion so Qi and Blood can effectively push the fetus out.
Hong Hua (Carthami Flos): 3 fen, large doses break blood, small doses invigorate blood and generate new. Stir-fried with wine.
Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex): Peel and chop before decoction. 6 fen (8 fen in winter). Acts as a guiding herb, leading others directly into the Blood level; warmth circulates and disperses stasis, making birth easier.
Add one Jiao Zao (Jujubae Fructus cum nucleo). Decoct in water, take warm before meals. If the mother is robust or unable to take Ren Shen, omit it; the induction effect will still be significantly greater than Foshou San.
Commentary: Women at labor face the critical moment of life and death for both mother and child. Hence, many formulas were created by ancients. However, childbirth severely damages Qi and Blood. Most dystocias result from Qi and Blood deficiency. Postpartum diseases belong to severe Qi and Blood depletion, but postpartum deficiencies often originate from prenatal conditions. Formulas like Foshou San, Tunaowan (Rabbit Brain Pills), Kuihua (Abutilonis Semen), and Yimucao (Leonuri Herba) primarily invigorate blood, regulate Qi, lubricate the fetus, break stasis, warm, and open orifices to promote expulsion, ignoring the source of this operational force. For mothers with strong vitality, these guides facilitate easy birth. But if Qi and Blood are insufficient, despite the guiding effect, there is no operational force to drive the herbs, offering little benefit. Methods like holding Shiyan (Flint) or applying Bibai (Ricini Semen) to feet are for peace of mind in true/normal cases. In cases of extreme Qi and Blood depletion, such superficial methods are ineffective, like scratching through boots; forcing induction without regulating Qi and Blood lacks the tools for operation. These retain only empty names, causing fatal delays. Daseng San is balanced but only suitable for prenatal regulation. Shenghua Tang is profound but only for postpartum regulation, not for emergency induction. Wanquan Tang combines the essence of these two, aiming for completeness, and has proven effective repeatedly. It first tonifies and regulates Qi and Blood, assists with dispersing stasis, descending, and warming the center. When Qi and Blood are strengthened, they naturally facilitate induction—this is "induction without forcing." Ren Shen and Dang Gui are Sovereigns to tonify Qi and Blood. Tao Ren, Chuan Xiong, Hei Jiang (Charred Ginger), Zhi Gan Cao, and Jiu Hong Hua (Wine-fried Carthamus) slightly warm the center and disperse stasis. Niu Xi Sui and Gui Xin (Cinnamon Heart) warm, move, and guide downward, preventing upward rushing to the heart. Not only does it induce labor divinely, but it also prevents postpartum blood stasis and disease. Tonifying with warmth prevents stagnation; warming with tonification prevents collapse. Less lifting, more descending allows Qi to be lifted yet easily descend; descending with lifting ensures stasis removal and new blood return. More tonifying, less purging expels evil while preserving Yuan Qi. Less bitter, more sweet drives stasis while maintaining harmony. Is this not the ultimate safe induction formula?

Cuisheng Jianyi Fang (Simple Labor-Inducing Formula)
When herbs are unavailable, take yellow paper from the current year's *Datong Calendar* (imprinted with Imperial Astronomical Bureau approval and seals). Burn it to ash without others seeing. Mix ash with one cup of wine and have the mother swallow; birth occurs immediately.
Alternatively, request a warrant stick from local officials. Write on it in red ink: "Magistrate [Name] of [County], awaiting here to induce labor." Place the stick upside down at the threshold of the delivery room. Birth occurs immediately. Return the stick to the county office. Highly effective.
Cuisheng Ruyi San (Labor-Inducing Ruyi Powder) Take only when lower back pain occurs during labor.
Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma): 1 qian
Ruxiang (Olibanum): 1 qian
Chensha (Cinnabar): 5 fen
Grind into powder. At labor, mix with one egg white and fresh Ginger juice. Cool and take. Corrects transverse/breech presentation immediately, ensuring safety for mother and child.
Cuishong Xionggui Tang (Labor-Inducing Ligusticum-Angelica Decoction) (Same as Foshou San but different preparation; also called Cuisheng Shaogui Tang.) Treats fetal distress due to trauma, dead fetus in utero, pain, and lockjaw. Use to test: if viable, pain stops and both are safe; if deceased, it is expelled immediately. Also for induction and transverse/breech dystocia.
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix): 6 qian
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma): 3 qian
Decoct in 2.5 zhong of water until nearly dry. Add 1 zhong of first-distillation liquor, boil, and take warm. If lockjaw, force-feed. Repeat after walking five li. Birth usually occurs within three doses. A woman who failed to deliver after three days was treated with this formula plus 2 liang of Yi Mu Cao, decocted in equal parts wine and water; she delivered immediately. Others have used this alone for transverse/breech presentations with frequent success.
Congbai Yimu Tang (Scallion-Yi Mu Decoction) Treats dystocia.
Yimu Cao (Leonuri Herba): 5 qian
Congtou (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus): 3 qian
Decoct with a 4-liang silver ingot and 2 bowls of water until 1 bowl remains. Take; birth follows.
Shenzuo Yin (Divine Zao Wood Drink) Rapidly induces labor. Treats transverse/breech presentation and dead fetus.
Sheng Zao Shu Cizhi (Branches of Quercus variabilis): One handful (size of little finger), washed, chopped. (Leaves have thorns, found everywhere.)
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma): 5 qian (another version uses 5 cun).
Xin Ji Shui (Fresh Well Water): 1.5 bowls.
Place in a new clay pot, seal tightly with three layers of paper. Decoct over medium-low heat to 80% volume. Take warm. Do not decoct dregs. When feeling abdominal pain, heavy lower back, and urge to squat, take one cup warm. Feeling opens in the chest. If thirsty, drink another cup. Feeling heaviness indicates birth; no risk of difficult/transverse presentation. For transverse/breech, corrects within three doses. Dead fetus expelled within three doses. Ensures safety for both. Highly miraculous. Case: A woman with transverse presentation had arm protruding, causing shoulder swelling. Amputation was considered risky. Multiple induction attempts failed. After drinking one bowl of concentrated Shenzuo Yin, she revived instantly. After a second bowl, she slept briefly, then said her joints felt separated. Help her up. Blood and water gushed out, and the dead fetus was removed effortlessly. This formula saves lives with 100% accuracy. However, *Shishi Milu* advises caution. See commentary under Jiawei Shenzuo Yin.
Shilu Jiawei Shenzuo Yin (Secret Record Modified Divine Zao Wood Drink) (With Commentary.) Treats head engaged but failure to progress due to non-opening of Jiaogu (pubic symphysis).
Zao Mu Zhi (Quercus variabilis Branch): 1 liang or 5 qian
Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix): 2 liang
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma): 1 liang
Ren Shen (Panax Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma): 1 liang
Decoct and take. If head is engaged but stuck, taking this will result in a loud sound and immediate birth. Truly a miraculous formula.
Commentary: If the head has not engaged, absolutely do NOT use Zao Mu Zhi. This herb specifically opens the pubic symphysis. Using it before the head engages causes the cervix to open prematurely, leading to fetal death. Must wait until head is engaged before using. I previously stated Zao Mu Zhi alone treats transverse/dystocia and should be taken when squatting urge arises. Caution against premature use. Better to wait until head is engaged and stuck.
Ruzhu Dan (Milk-Cinnabar Pill) (Also known as Kaigu Gao/Bone-Opening Paste.) Treats dystocia and non-opening of pubic symphysis.
Ruxiang (Olibanum): Any amount.
On specific dates (3rd day of 3rd month, 5th of 5th, 7th of 7th), grind finely, mix with Pig Heart Blood, roll into pills size of Wuzi (Phytolacca berries), coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar), dry and store. For dystocia, dissolve one pill in cool wine. If no birth, repeat. Alternatively, use 7 Lotus Leaf Stems, decoct in 2 zhong water to 1 zhong, dissolve pill. Highly effective.
Fulonggan San (Dragon Sitting Earth Powder) Treats transverse dystocia.
Fulonggan (Calcined Metoprum / Hearth Soil): Use red soil from the center of the stove, aged is best.
Grind finely. Mix with warm wine, take 1 qian. Head emerges carrying earth.

Huang Kui Hua (Abutilon Flower): 2 qian, dried.
Grind to powder. Mix with hot water; highly effective. For leaking blood, dry uterus, severe pain, take three doses. Abdominal pressure eases, fetus slides out. If no flower, use Huang Shu Kui Zi (Abutilon Seed) 2 qian ground, taken with wine. If dead fetus retained, use Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) decocted in wine. *Jingyan Fang* uses 30-49 seeds. Verse: "Thirty golden seeds, ground fine with wine for emergencies. Life hangs by a thread, sparing family grief."
Shouwodan (Hand-Holding Pill) (Also known as Tunaowan/Rabbit Brain Pill.) Treats abnormal physiology and difficult labor.
Shiyue Tunaosui (December Rabbit Brain Marrow): Remove membrane, grind to paste.
Ruxiang (Olibanum): 1 fen, finely ground (another version: 2 qian, no She Xiang).
Mu Dingxiang (Syzygii Aromatisati Flos): 1 qian, ground.
She Xiang (Moschus): 1 zi (approx. 0.3g), finely ground.
Mix herbs evenly, bind with rabbit brain marrow into pills size of Qianshi (Euryale seed). Dry in shade, store in oiled paper. Take one pill with warm water. Male babies come out holding left hand, females right hand.

Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma): Each 2 liang.
Place in clay pot, seal with paper slip and salt mud. Calcine until red. Cool, grind finely.
Baicaoshuang (Carbonized Grass Ash): 3 qian.
Ruxiang (Olibanum).
Sheng Liuhuang (Native Sulfur).
Hupo (Electrum).
Huariusshi (Laumontite): Calcined. Each 2 qian.
These five herbs total 1 liang 1 qian. Grind to powder. Mix with previously calcined powder. Cook with Rice Vinegar, bind with Wheat Flour Paste into pills size of bullet. Before use, heat pill over charcoal until red-hot. Drop into crushed fresh Ginger juice. Mix with Wu Hui Jiu (Pure Liquor) and Tongbian (Urine of healthy boy). Take in one dose. I consider this formula harsh; use with caution.
Cuishuqidashen Yan Fang (Labor-Inducing and Erythema Divine-Efficient Formula) Treats dystocia and erythema not swelling/filling.
Shanyang Xue (Capra Hircus Blood): 7-8 fen or 1 qian.
Dissolve in wine and take. Birth occurs instantly, non-toxic, prevents postpartum stasis/syncope. Claim: Blood gathers at baby's crown. Also treats infant erythema not swelling/filling. Dosage based on age (li/qian). Mix with fermented rice wine. Similar to Chicken Comb Blood but superior.
Zunsheng Jiusheng Tang (Respect-Life Life-Saving Decoction) Treats dystocia and non-opening of pubic symphysis.
Quan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix): 1 liang
Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma): 2 qian
Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum): One piece, roasted crisp, crushed.
Toutou (Human Hair): One handful, burned to ash (preserve character).
Decoct in Wine and Water. For deficient persons or those with weak force from multiple births, add 2-3 qian Ren Shen. Delivery occurs after walking 4-5 li. If not, take again urgently. Other induction drugs may harm. I consider this modified Xionggui Tang. Different dosages, same ingredients. Effective in *Zunsheng*, likely due to adding Ren Shen for deficiency.
Shenying Dan (Divine-Response Pill) (Also known as Wanquan Gao/Ten-Thousand-Safety Paste.)
Bimazi (Ricini Semen): 7 kernels, shelled.
Grind Bi Ma into paste. Add 1 fen She Xiang (Moschus). Grind into paste. Apply to sole of mother's foot. Wash off immediately after birth; delay risks uterine prolapse. If prolapse occurs, apply to vertex (top of head) to retract intestine. Remove quickly. Fast but harsh; use with caution. Alternative: 49 kernels, ground, applied to vertex for intestinal prolapse during labor. Remove immediately after retraction.
