During pregnancy, if there is dribbling, scanty volume, and dysuria (painful or difficult urination), it is because the Qi and Blood gather to nourish the fetal origin, failing to adequately moisten and permeate the water passages, thereby causing stagnant heat in the Bladder. Another view states: During pregnancy, the uterus is connected to the Kidney; deficient heat from the Kidney transfers to the Bladder, forming this syndrome, named *Zi Lin* (Dysuria of Pregnancy). The primary treatment formula is Jiajian Anrong San (Modified Anrong Powder). However, the ancient Anrong San contains Hua Shi (Talcum), which is a heavy and sinking agent that may induce abortion. It might be acceptable near term, but before the seventh or eighth month, it is safer to remove Hua Shi and add Shi Hu (Dendrobium) and Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit). If the condition persists for a long time accompanied by fatigue and a weak pulse on the right side, this indicates Qi deficiency with sinking, causing a sensation of bearing down, and weak Qi with empty intestines leading to difficulty in bowel movement. A large dose of Shenmai Yin (Ginseng and Ophiopogon Decoction) should be used to tonify Qi and nourish the source of transformation, after which urination will naturally become smooth. There are also cases treated for scanty and obstructed urination using Shengliao Liuwei Wan (Raw Material Six-Ingredient Pill) added with Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry), and Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), made into pills. Additionally, Jiawei Daochi Tang (Modified Guide Out the Red Decoction) is used to treat pregnant women with scanty, obstructed, and painful urination, and also treats hematuria. *Quan Shu* records: For *Zi Lin*, if Anrong San is ineffective, Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) can be taken concurrently. If leg and foot cramps occur with urinary obstruction, Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill) must be used urgently; otherwise, delay will make rescue impossible.
Jiajian Anrong San (Modified Anrong Powder): Treats pregnant women with short, obstructed urine or dribbling.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (washed with wine, each 2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) (2 or 3 qian, heart removed), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1 qian, stir-fried with soil), Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Fu Ling Pi (Poria Cocos Sclerotium Rind) (each 8 fen), Sheng Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (5 fen).
Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) 5 fen, decocted in water and taken orally. The original formula contains Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) and Hua Shi (Talcum), but lacks Bai Zhu and Fu Ling Pi. If there is phlegm or liver fire stirred by anger, add Jiu Chao Ku Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried with wine) 7 fen to clear Lung Metal. In this formula, Ren Shen tonifies Qi, Dang Gui regulates Blood, Mai Dong clears the Lung to nourish the Kidney source, and Tong Cao and Deng Xin Cao promote urination to resolve stagnation.
Shenmai Yin (see Volume Lower, Syncope Section, attached under Shenmai Wuwei Yin.) Liuwei Wan (see this Volume, Various Pains Section, attached under Liuwei Dihuang Tang. Ingredients are all used raw, hence called Shengliao [Raw Material].) Jiawei Daochi Tang Bazhen Tang (all see this Volume, Various Pains Section.) Bawei Wan (see this Volume, Various Pains Section, attached under Liuwei Dihuang Tang. I believe Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) are contraindicated during pregnancy; this likely refers to an Eight-Ingredient Pill containing Mai Dong and Che Qian.)
