(Attached: Asthma)
[Pulse and Symptoms] Excess-type panting (Shi Chuan, panting due to excess pathogenic factors) is characterized by abundant Qi in the Lung and hyperactivity of Lung pathogens, with unsmooth respiration and obstruction of the Lung orifices. The pulse at the right Cun position is deep and forceful; this type is suitable for treatment via purging the Lung.
Pathogen-induced panting arises from the Lung contracting cold pathogens, which lie dormant in the Lung meridian, causing blockage of the orifices and unsmooth respiration. The pulse at the right Cun position is deep and tight, and there are cases where all six positions exhibit a hidden pulse. Treatment via dispersing the exterior will resolve body heat and calm the panting.
The *San Yin Fang* describes the manifestations of excess and deficiency: In Lung excess, the Lung must be distended, with Qi counterflow and panting, a sensation of blockage in the throat resembling vomiting, accompanied by spontaneous sweating. In Lung deficiency, there must be dryness of the throat without fluids, shortness of Qi, and insufficient breath.
[Etiology] Deficient Qi invading the Lung; Yin deficiency leading to rising fire; presence of phlegm; water qi assaulting the Lung.
[Therapy] For chronic panting that comes and goes intermittently: Take one stomach of a male pig, clean it according to culinary methods, insert four to five taels of Xingren (Apricot Seed), sew it shut with thread, add three bowls of vinegar, and boil until the vinegar is dry, then remove. Eat the stomach first, then bake the Xingren on a new tile, rub off the skin, and eat immediately; this prevents recurrence forever.
Qi-Deficiency Formula: Treats Qi deficiency.
Renshen (Ginseng Root) Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, honey-fried) Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) Digupi (Lycium Cortex)
Blood-Deficiency Formula: Treats Yin deficiency with phlegm.
Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) Zhike (Aurantium Fruit) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber)
Daotan Qianmin Tang (Phlegm-Guiding Thousand-Silk Decoction)
Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) Nanxing (Arisaema Tuber) Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) Fuling (Poria) Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Spine) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus)
Jieyao Fang (Emergency Medication Formula): Treats persistent panting; if severe, bitter-cold medicines should not be used; warm medications should be used to seize the pathogen.
Jiaomu (Zanthoxylum Seed, 2 qian), powdered, taken with ginger decoction. Laifuzi (Radish Seed, steamed), Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Spine, charred but retaining nature). Formed into pills with ginger juice, held in the mouth to dissolve. Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome, roasted), Qianniu (Morning Glory Seed, each 2 liang, stir-fried). Each powdered, taken with honey water, 2 qian per dose. Treats sudden violent panting due to hot phlegm approaching death.
Xiebai San (Drain White Powder): Treats Yin qi below and Yang qi above, with coughing, panting, vomiting, and counterflow.
Sangbaipi (Morus Bark, 1 liang) Qingpi (Citrus Reticulata Green Peel) Wuwei Zi (Schisandra Fruit) Gancao (Licorice Root) Fuling (Poria) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Xingren (Apricot Seed) Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) [Add these two herbs if there is phlegm-drool, vomiting, and counterflow] Digupi (Lycium Cortex, 7 qian)
Decoct with fresh ginger.
Shenmi Tang (Mysterious Decoction): Treats water qi counterflowing to assault the Lung; the Lung becomes buoyant upon receiving water, causing Qi flow to stagnate. The pulse is deep and large. This condition applies to those who cannot lie flat and experience panting when supine.
Zisu (Perilla Leaf) Chenpi (Citrus Reticulata Peel) Sangbaipi (Morus Bark) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) Renshen (Ginseng Root, each 5 qian) Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) Fuling (Poria, 2 qian)
Asthma
[Etiology] Asthma originates internally; phlegm should be expelled via emesis.
[Therapy] Xiaoji Dan (Asthma-Accumulation Pill): Crack an egg slightly without damaging the membrane, soak it in a urine jar for four to five days and nights, then consume it; this is effective. Eggs can dispel wind-phlegm. Luobozizi Wan (Radish Seed Pills), taken with ginger decoction, yield wonderful results.
