[Pathogenesis and Manifestations] When the Spleen has heat, there is a sweet taste in the mouth; when the Gallbladder has heat, there is a bitter taste in the mouth. Bitter taste in the mouth can also be caused by Liver deficiency and cold.
[Treatment] Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) treats sweet taste in the mouth. Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) treats bitter taste in the mouth and indecisiveness in planning.
Add Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong), Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren), Paeoniae Cortex (Digupi), and Polygalae Radix (Yuanzhi) to Chaihu Tang.
[Pulse] The Heart pulse connects to the root of the tongue, the Spleen pulse connects to the sides of the tongue, and the Liver and Kidney pulses connect to the base of the tongue.
[Pathogenesis and Manifestations] If struck by Wind-Cold, the tongue curls and shrinks, preventing speech. Depression of the Seven Emotions causes tongue swelling and fullness, obstructing breathing. Liver congestion causes blood to rush upward; Heart heat causes cracking and sores on the tongue. Spleen heat causes a slippery coating, indicating deficient heat with Heart channel heat flying upward; Spleen closure causes a white coating like snow; Spleen heat causes tongue stiffness. Tongue curling with testicular retraction indicates exhaustion of the Jueyin channel, which is fatal.
[Treatment] Jinfeicao San (Boiling Down Herb Powder) treats Wind-Cold damaging the Heart and Spleen, causing alternating chills and fever, floating teeth, and tongue swelling.
Ingredients: Jinfeicao (Spreading Vetch Herb), Jingjie (Schizonepeta Herb) (4 liang each), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb) (3 liang each), Gancao (Licorice Root), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome) (1 liang).

Swollen and ulcerated tongue: Apply soot from the bottom of the pot (Guodimei), mixed with vinegar and salt, externally.
Bleeding like a spring: Sprinkle powder made from Baijiaoxiang (Agarwood Resin), Wubeizi (Chinese Gall), and Muli (Oyster Shell).
White coating with slurred speech: Apply Mint Juice and White Honey, wipe with ginger slice, then apply medication.
[Pathogenesis] Wind-Heat and Blood Deficiency. The classics state: "The eyes see only when nourished by blood." This is due to Liver Blood failing to nourish the eyes upwards, combined with mental fatigue. The eyes are the master of Shen (Spirit); fatigue scatters Hun and Po, preventing their harmony. Kidney deficiency prevents Water Essence from ascending to nourish the eyes.
[Manifestations and Treatment] Disease in the Fu organs is Exterior syndrome, requiring dispelling Wind and clearing Heat. Disease in the Zang organs is Interior syndrome, requiring nourishing Blood and calming Spirit. Sudden blindness, blurry vision with nebula, discharge and tearing, or spots entering the eye are all Exterior syndromes caused by Wind-Heat, requiring dispersal to eliminate the pathogen. Blurry/weak vision unwilling to look at objects, interior cataract seeing black flowers, dilated pupils are all Interior syndromes caused by Blood deficiency, mental fatigue, and Kidney deficiency, requiring nourishing Blood, replenishing fluids, and calming Spirit for regulation.
Spots entering the eye indicate excessive Liver Qi manifesting in the Exterior; dilated pupils are caused by acrid-hot substances. Acrid nature disperses, and Heat exacerbates it; thus, one must dispel Wind-Heat, cool and nourish Blood, and gather scattered Qi. Use Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) for their bitter-cold property to clear excess pathogenic factors as Sovereign herbs; Danggui Shen (Angelica Sinensis Radix) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) to nourish and cool Blood as Minister herbs; Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) for its sour-cold property and light floating texture to constrict dilated pupils; Digupi (Paeoniae Cortex) and Tiantong (Asparagi Radix) to drain Heat and tonify Qi.
For sudden redness and swelling of the eyes, use Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) as Sovereign herbs to drain Fire, and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) as Assistant herbs to harmonize Blood.
For acute redness and swelling of the eyes, use Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix). Add a small amount of Baidoukou (Cardamomi Fructus) if the sclera is red.
For chronic dimness of the eyes, use Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) and Danggui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) as Sovereign herbs, assisted by Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Ganju (Chrysanthemi Flos).

For interior cataracts caused by Spleen deficiency and flourishing fire attacking upward, add: Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). For damp-heat, add: Fried Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix). For eye pain, add Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix).
