Extract the juice from ripe red millet seeds (Setaria italica), decoct it until it is as thick as dense maltose syrup, and then use it to mix with cinnabar. If red millet seeds are unavailable, millet husks may also be used. Whenever taking cinnabar, one must avoid all meat, fish, leftover food, raw and cold foods, and garlic; especially avoid raw blood products and contact with bloody filth. Ge, a Vice Minister from Jiangyin, suffered from a foot disease in middle age that nearly disabled him. After long-term treatment without improvement, he obtained this prescription and took it, resulting in a cure. His body became lighter and more agile than in his youth, and at over eighty years old, his appetite and hearing and vision remained unimpaired. He treasured this prescription and never passed it on to others. During the Zhiping era, I contracted a foot ailment and sought this prescription through various means, but due to my official travels, I have not yet had the opportunity to prepare and take it. Additionally, Sun Yonghe, a Grand Physician, once obtained this prescription. During the reign of Emperor Renzong, he presented it to the court. Although its general outline was similar, it was very crude and not the true prescription.
There is a cave in Luoyang whose depth cannot be measured. A person fell into it and could not get out, suffering from extreme hunger. He saw countless turtles and snakes, each morning stretching their heads eastward to gaze at the sun, inhaling the light of the rising sun and swallowing it. The man followed their example and continued doing so, eventually no longer feeling hungry. His body became light and strong, and he later returned home. He did not eat, and his final fate is unknown. This occurred during the time of Emperor Wu of Jin. There are hundreds of methods for Bigu (fasting/grain avoidance), but this is the finest and most excellent method. With this method alone, if one can also cultivate "Jade Spring" (saliva swallowing practice) and make lead and mercury manifest physically, one will not be far from becoming an immortal. This method is very easy to understand and practice; everyone in the world can know it. However, those who know it cannot practice it. Why? Because there is no one in the world who can achieve emptiness, unity, and stillness. In the second year of Yuanfu, rice prices were high in Dan'er, and I faced the worry of running out of food. I wished to practice this method together with Guozi, so I wrote it down to teach him. Recorded on April 19th.
After the Winter Solstice, reside in abstinence. Frequently inhale nasal mucus, rinse the mouth with it, refine it until it tastes sweet, and then swallow it down to the Lower Dantian (lower abdomen energy center). Prepare thirty porcelain jars with lids. Urinate into them, and immediately cover them. Mark them on top with numbers from one to thirty. Place them in a clean room and select a cautious and simple person to guard them. After thirty days, open and inspect them. Fine sand should form on the surface, resembling floating ants, either yellow or red. Filter through fine silk gauze. Take newly drawn water, wash and clarify repeatedly until all foul odors are gone. Store in a clean porcelain bottle with a tight seal. After the Summer Solstice, take finely ground jujube flesh, form pills the size of sophora tree seeds. Swallow with wine on an empty stomach. The number of pills is unlimited, but finish them within three to five days. After the Summer Solstice, collect and prepare again using the previous method, but wait until after the Winter Solstice to take them. This is called "Yang Cinnabar refined by Yin." One must maintain purity and abstain from sexual desire; if desire is not cut off, true cinnabar will not condense.
