In the prescriptions of Zhang Zhongjing, the term "Baijiu" (White Wine) first appears. After the Jin and Tang dynasties, various medical texts and materia medica works never discussed the efficacy of Baijiu. Why is this? Did physicians of the Jin and Tang dynasties not know the efficacy of this substance? Or were the various materia medica works too brief regarding it? This remains a point of suspicion. Only Li Shizhen, in his *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica), citing the *Zimu Milu*, recorded a prescription using Gualou Baijiu to treat Ruyong (Mastitis). Apart from this, no other records have been found.
I have often stated that since Wang Shuhe compiled and arranged Zhang Zhongjing's prescriptions, through the Sui, Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties, there has not been a single person who fully mastered and applied these methods. Why? Therefore, I now seek to understand them by examining the relationship between medicines and syndromes. One might ask: How can we understand them? The answer is: Zhang Zhongjing once used Chengchong (Blister Beetle), yet no subsequent medical books record the use of its prescriptions; Zhang Zhongjing once used Baijiu, yet no materia medica discusses this substance; Zhang Zhongjing once treated Zangzao (Visceral Agitation Syndrome) in women with Gancao Xiaomai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction), but physicians throughout history failed to understand the treatment method for this syndrome, thus unable to apply this formula; Zhang Zhongjing once treated Xiongbi (Chest Bi Syndrome) with two formulas containing Baijiu, yet physicians across the land did not understand the manifestations of Xiongbi, thus unable to use these two formulas. Thus, for two thousand years, people have failed to fully master Zhang Zhongjing's methods, and I now comprehend this. Alas! We younger scholars, fortunate enough to inherit the virtue of Dongdong Weng (Yoshitsugu Dodo), have come to fully master Zhang Zhongjing's methods. Is this not not a blessing from Heaven?
The efficacy of Baijiu has been obscured for a long time. Various materia medica only recorded Jiangshui (Fermented Rice Water) in the "Water Section," unaware that it is a fermented product; therefore, they did not list it in the "Fermentation Section" but rather in the "Earth Water Section." The *Daguan Bencao* further erroneously listed it in the "Jade and Stone Section," which is laughable. Jiangshui and Jiuzu (Vinegar) are indeed fermentation products. If substances brewed using groundwater are listed in the Water Section, then vinegar should also be listed there. Such errors in materia medica are common.
The syndrome description for Gualou Xiebai Baijiu Tang states: In Xiongbi disease, symptoms include panting, coughing and spitting phlegm, pain in the chest and back, and shortness of breath. The syndrome description for Gualou Xiebai Banxia Tang states: In Xiongbi, the patient cannot lie flat, and heart pain radiates to the back. Based on the indications for these two formulas, it can be seen that Baijiu treats pain and oppression in the chest, back, and heart. The indications for the former formula are mild, while those for the latter are severe. What is the rationale? Generally, Xiongbi presents with panting, coughing and spitting phlegm, chest and back pain, and shortness of breath. When the pain becomes severe, manifesting as heart pain radiating to the back, then...
