This condition, at its onset, often presents with fatigue and sweating, with involuntary shaking during sleep. The body feels as if exposed to wind, accompanied by languor and debility, or intermittent attacks of pain.
As the disease progresses, purple patches and swelling emerge. Severe pain may turn into itching, accompanied by soreness, weakness, and numbness; intense itching may then shift back to pain. Sometimes the skin ulcerates with foul-smelling discharge, leading to limping, contractures, and deformity, causing day-and-night groaning. This is caused by constitutional deficiency allowing wind-pathogens to penetrate deeply into the Yin aspect. Qi and blood are assaulted by wind, causing muscle relaxation and open pores, which allows sudden wind invasion. The Liver is affected, leading to stagnation of Heart Qi and dampness accumulation in the Spleen, resulting in the generation of toxic insects that corrode muscles. Treatment with Bujiu Tang (Old-Replenishing Decoction), Qiangong Gao (Lead-Mercury Ointment), Erba Jiyang Dan (Two-Eight Yang-Nourishing Pill), etc., may prevent the condition from becoming incurable.
This condition begins above the supraorbital ridge or in facial crevices, developing perforations that ulcerate into sores, some as large as a coin. Alternatively, small sores appear all over the body before turning into ulcers. The main symptom is the discharge of pus, which dries into sticky, filthy accumulations of thick fluid. Where foul sweat and saliva adhere, sores immediately form. From head to foot, it causes generalized leprosy-like lesions, sunken eyes, broken nose, and everted lips; it is also known as Meifeng (Eyebrow Wind). It arises from indulgence in alcohol and lust, neglecting protection against wind-damp, leading to coagulation of Liver Blood, flooding of Heart Fire, and dissipation of Yang Qi. Urgent treatment involves internal administration of Bujiu Tang, Kushen Wan (Sophora Root Pill), and Daxiaofeng San (Great Wind-Expelling Powder), combined with external washing and application of medicines, focusing primarily on greatly tonifying Qi and Blood.
This condition originates in the muscles and joints, characterized by wandering, cramping pain without rest day or night. The limbs cannot flex or extend, and the patient cannot turn over while sitting or lying. There may be flaccid tendons and weakness, or bedridden paralysis. When Yang Qi is deficient, symptoms are quiet at night but severe during the day; when Yin Qi is weak, symptoms are lighter during the day but heavier at night. In chronic cases, even clothing and bedding cannot be tolerated. If Dampness is prevalent, hot water provides slight relief, but bathing increases the severity of the disease. If Wind is dominant, heat offers slight relief, but removing the heat source exacerbates the condition. Chronic illness leads to worsening edema, hiccups, anorexia, or non-healing ulcers. This results from excessive sexual activity, worry, and obsessive thoughts, where the six desires and seven emotions daily deplete Qi and Blood. Wind-damp toxic pathogens damage and exhaust Liver fluids, transmitting to the Spleen and Stomach, causing exhaustion of Ying and Wei, leading to the depletion of essence and marrow. Alternatively, suppressed private thoughts failing to find expression agitate Qi and Blood, or anger, irregular eating, emotional trauma, strong winds, sudden rains, and rebellious Qi filling the limbs and meridians cause Xingbi (Wandering Bi Syndrome). The pain shifts unpredictably, hence the name Xuanfeng (Whirlwind Wind). Treatment with Dadings Wan (Great Stabilizing Pill), Yitong Sheng San (Yi-Tong Holy Powder), Yangqi Shengling Dan (Yang-Qi Holy Spirit Pill), Shenniang Wan (Divine Fermentation Pill), etc., is appropriate.
