To know the official rank, one must look at the Gallbladder pulse. The clarity of the Wiry (Xian) and Moderate (Huan) pulses depends entirely on the Liver pulse. If the Liver pulse is Wiry and long, it ultimately signifies nobility; the person will either become a high minister or an official of the Langguan type. If the Liver and Gallbladder pulses are Excessively large with unclear sounds, or Fine and Tight, the person is destined for prolonged hardship. If additionally floating and high, Short and Choppy, and sinking without clarity, it is not auspicious. The Liver pulse is usually Wiry and long, while the Gallbladder pulse follows the decline and prosperity of the Liver. In Spring, if the pulse is Wiry and wide-long, or in any of the four seasons shows a Wiry and wide-long quality, these are pulses of high officials and nobility.
The Spleen pulse should be Wide and Moderate, indicating a good mood. Its touch against the finger feels like striking the heart field, unpredictable in its softness. Whether Large, Small, Floating, or Sinking, as long as they all resemble Moderation, it indicates high position and prominence, revealing grand talent. The Spleen belongs to the Central Palace Earth, flourishing for eighteen days in each season. Its pulse is Wide and Moderate, representing the prosperity of Spleen Earth, which presides over joyful events. If the pulse strikes the finger, there are matters in the heart that cannot be guessed. If the pulse is moderate in size and Floating/Moderate, this is a constitution that has obtained the time and is prosperous; such a person must possess great wisdom and talent, suitable for becoming a top-ranking official.
The Taichai and Huagai pulses must be Floating. A sense of emptiness under the finger does not mean the matter is false. If repeated palpation reveals no Excessively large quality, literary success will be achieved (high ranking in examinations). The Lung is called Huagai; it floats in water. Therefore, if the Lung pulse is Floating and light, the person will pass the imperial examination with high honors. If the pulse is Sinking and Large and constantly moving, disaster is certain.
If the pulse is Sinking and Long, coming Sliippery without needing to be High/Anxious. This indicates not only longevity but also wisdom and talent; a loyal minister assisting the state is not ordinary. When examining the Kidney pulse, it should be Sinking, Slippery, and Long. Obtaining this pulse indicates a prosperous phase. Such a person will have longevity and much wisdom, and must serve as a loyal minister assisting the country. A pulse that is High and Anxious indicates a low-status person, who will face disaster in this season.
When the Yuan Qi (Primal Qi) suddenly moves into a Slippery quality, official promotion and joy will surely follow. It is necessary that the Heart pulse is also Wide and Grand. One must pause and deliberate carefully. The Qi of the Yuan Zang (Primal Organ), referring to the root of true Yuan Qi, should normally be Sinking and Slippery. If accompanied by slight Choppy qualities, there is joy. If resembling flowing river water, one must beware of unforeseen disasters in the four seasons.
The Left and Right Chi (Cun-Kou distal positions) pulses must be clearly distinguished; blessings from the Fushen (Auspicious God) are unique. Carefully observe Hong (Surging), Jin (Tight), and Xin Liuli (Heart Smooth Flowing) pulses. By calculating the days, one can know advancement to the six directions (promotion). The Kidney is Water of the North; when clarified, wisdom arises and joy/knowledge is generated. Regarding public affairs, the pulse appears at the Cun (Inch) position; regarding private affairs, the pulse appears at the two Chi positions. If the Cun pulse is Surging and Tight, noble people will bring joy in the middle of the month. If the pulse is Empty and Scattered, there will be unforeseen disasters.
