If the radial arteries at both cun and chi positions (distal and proximal wrist positions) are merely floating and large, and accompanied by symptoms of vomiting and rebellious qi, it can be concluded that the woman is three months pregnant. If the left chi position pulse is floating and large, it indicates a male fetus; if the right chi position pulse is floating and large, it indicates a female fetus.
If the chi position pulses and the liver pulse are solid, large, and forceful, with a regular rhythm, it definitely indicates twin male fetuses.
If the left chi position pulse is generally floating, solid, and large, with a regulated rhythm, it indicates one male and one female fetus.
When examining the pulse, one must clear the mind and stabilize thoughts, sitting for a while to examine in detail, ensuring no mistakes.
If the liver pulse is floating, large, and forceful, it indicates one month of pregnancy.
If the right guan position (middle wrist position) pulses in both sections are solid, large, and forceful, it indicates eight or nine months, or ten months of pregnancy.
If the left guan position pulse is floating, large, and tight, it indicates full term (ten months). Specific judgments can be found recorded in *Jing Mai Jue* (Classic of Meridian Pulse Diagnosis).
If a woman’s body feels heavy, and both the guan and chi position pulses are deep and fine, it is known as an overdue pregnancy. It can be determined that the woman will give birth after twelve months.
In another case, if a woman’s body feels heavy, and both chi position pulses are deep and hidden, the woman has excess blood but deficient qi. The pregnancy will definitely last until fifteen months before birth. For methods to determine gender, refer to *Chi Sheng Pian*.
In the left hand three-position pulse method, the Hand meridians represent the superficial aspect and correspond to Heaven. The Heart belongs to the Hand Shaoyin Meridian, the Small Intestine to the Hand Taiyang Meridian, the Liver to the Foot Jueyin Meridian, the Gallbladder to the Foot Shaoyang Meridian, the Kidney to the Foot Shaoyin Meridian, and the Bladder to the Foot Taiyang Meridian.
The pulse belongs to Yin. The pulse is the pathway of blood. Respiration (breath) belongs to Yang. Respiration is the breathing of Qi. The pulse does not move on its own; it moves due to the influence of Qi. When Blood and Qi are abundant, the pulse is vigorous; when they decline, the pulse weakens. To diagnose the pulse and respiration, one must first regulate one’s own Qi, then take the patient’s pulse to observe excess or deficiency, thereby knowing the depth of the disease. Sometimes, one should pause and remain calm for a moment before diagnosing others to determine the presence or absence of disease. Diagnosis can be performed at any time of day or night, not strictly confined to dawn.
The Cun, Guan, and Chi positions are defined from the interphalangeal joint of the fishy area. The transverse crease of the second segment of the middle finger represents one Cun. Moving inward represents one Chi. Dividing one Cun into ten parts yields Fen; dividing one Chi into ten Cun yields Cun. Yin obtains nine Fen within the Cun position, representing odd numbers (Yang); Yang obtains one Cun within the Chi position, representing even numbers (Yin). The Cun Kou and Chi together measure one Chi and nine Fen, symbolizing Heaven, Earth, and Humanity (San Cai). Yang exits, Yin enters, with the Guan position as the boundary. Depending on a person's height and build, finger placement is based on the prominent bone below the joint: anterior to Guan is Cun, posterior to Guan is Chi. The Three Yang meridians grow from the ground; thus, for men, anterior to Guan is Yang, and posterior is Yin. Men have more Yang and less Yin; their pulse manifests prominently below Guan. Therefore, the Cun pulse is strong and the Chi pulse is weak. Men should not suffer from chronic diarrhea; hence, if a man presents with a "female pulse" (typically indicating Yin deficiency), it signifies insufficiency. If this pulse appears on the left, the disease is on the left side; if on the right, the disease is on the right side. This is the fundamental method based on meridians.
Right hand three positions: The Lung belongs to the Hand Taiyin Meridian, the Large Intestine to the Hand Yangming Meridian, the Spleen to the Foot Taiyin Meridian, the Stomach to the Foot Yangming Meridian, the Mingmen (Gate of Life) to the Hand Jueyin Meridian, and the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) to the Hand Shaoyang Meridian.
