(Wei level, the defensive aspect of Qi),卫气属于阳;寒邪伤及营分(Ying level, the nutritive aspect of Blood),营血属于阴。
(Physicians) who can expound medical principles but do not understand the intent behind previous physicians' prescription and medication usage will consequently be rarely used by other doctors; this is hardly surprising. Furthermore, a pulse that is slow (Huan) and floating (Fu) indicates Wind-Strike (Zhong Feng); thus, symptoms such as aversion to wind (Se Se), shivering aversion to cold (Xi Xi), and mild fever (Xi Xi) occur. Zhang Zhongjing prescribes Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) to address this. A pulse that is floating (Fu), tight (Jin), and choppy (Se) indicates Cold Damage (Shang Han); thus, symptoms such as headache, fever, body pain, lower back pain, joint pain, aversion to cold, anhidrosis (absence of sweating), and wheezing occur. Zhang Zhongjing prescribes Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to address this. As for cases where Wind-Strike presents with a floating-tight pulse or Cold Damage presents with a floating-slow pulse, Zhang Zhongjing prescribes Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction) to address both. Why? I have deeply investigated these principles. If the clinical manifestations correspond accurately with the pulse diagnosis, recovery follows effortlessly. Why is this so? Wind pathogen injures the Defensive (Wei) level, which belongs to Qi; Cold pathogen injures the Nutritive (Ying) level, which belongs to Blood. Nutritive Qi circulates within the vessels, while Defensive Qi circulates outside the vessels. When Wind injures the Defensive level, the Wind pathogen attacks the Yang Qi, causing it to fail in its consolidating function and scatter outward as sweat, resulting in spontaneous sweating. This indicates exterior deficiency. Therefore, Zhang Zhongjing uses Guizhi Tang to disperse the pathogen and Shaoyao (Paeonia Root) to harmonize the blood. Generally, when Wind-Strike occurs, the pathology lies outside the vessels, and the disease...
