[From "Da"] Women have a deficient constitution, allowing wind-pathogenic qi to invade the skin. If additionally injured by wind-cold, wind-sao urticaria (itching hives) will erupt. If red rashes appear, it is because cold-dampness lodges in the muscles causing extreme heat; when heat becomes knotted, red rashes form. They flare up in great heat and improve upon exposure to cold. White rashes occur when wind qi lodges in the heat within the muscles; the heat and wind struggle against each other to form white rashes. They emerge on cloudy, rainy, or cold days, and also upon wind injury; they subside on sunny, warm days and heal with warm clothing. The pulse is floating and surging; floating indicates wind, while surging indicates qi. When wind and qi struggle, urticaria arises, causing body itching. Whenever one sweats, one must not sleep outdoors exposed to wind or dew, nor go out early after bathing, as this causes chills and fever, leading to the generation of wind-rash.
The Hermit Sage states: To treat women with generalized intermittent itching, or red, swollen urticaria, five-palm center heat, and blood-wind attacking and settling, use Renshen Jingjie San (Ginseng and Schizonepeta Decoction). [Indicated for deficiency-consumption blood-wind.] Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder), [Indicated for miscellaneous disease headache], Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Jingjie (Schizonepeta) or Renshen (Ginseng), Danggui San (Angelica Decoction) or Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) taken concurrently with Daochi Wan (Guide Out Red Pill). If there is no improvement, take Raojiao Wan (Soap Pod Pill) after meals. Elderly people with qi deficiency should not take it for long. If Raojiao Wan fails to resolve symptoms, this indicates severe stagnation and heat; one should first take Qingmuxiang Wan (Aucklandia Pill) for three doses to open the qi pathway, then take Jili San (Tribulus Powder) for immediate effect.
[Xue Ji] The aforementioned syndromes involve eruptions of nodules on the body, resembling erysipelas, with variable itching and pain, or weeping pus, fever, restlessness, and thirst, dizziness and vertigo of the head and eyes that worsen in the late afternoon, alternating chills and fever, and irregular menstruation. All are due to wind-heat and blood dryness in the Liver channel. Use Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) [primarily for regulating menstruation] assisted by Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Xiong (Ligusticum), and Gui (Angelica). If nodules erupt following anger, accompanied by pain, itching, chills, and fever, this is Liver fire and blood dryness; use Jiawei Xiao Chaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction). [Indicated for heat entering the blood chamber]. For simultaneous deficiency of qi and blood, use Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleurum) and Mudanpi (Moutan Bark). For night fevers, thirst, and delirium, this is heat entering the blood chamber; use Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root). For blood deficiency, combine Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with Xiao Chaihu Tang, followed by Jiawei Xiaoyao San for regulation. For depression, poor appetite, fatigue, internal heat, and afternoon fever, this is blood dryness in the Spleen channel; use Jiawei Guipi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction). Add Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit) and Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) for chills and fever. For migratory itching, this is blood-wind wandering; use Heshouwu San (Polygonum Multiflorum Powder). For blood deficiency, use Xiaoyao San. For wind-heat, use Xiaofeng San. If wind-dispersing herbs are used exclusively, yin-blood will be further damaged, inevitably leading to tendon spasms and other syndromes. One woman had eruptions of nodules, resembling erysipelas, with variable itching and pain, scratching until sores formed with weeping pus, fever, restlessness, thirst, dizziness, and worsening in the late afternoon. This was a syndrome of blood deficiency with internal heat, treated with Danggui Yin (Angelica Drink) added with Chaihu and Zhiren (Gardenia Seed) until cured. Another woman suffered from the aforementioned syndrome, with limb pain, unclear head and eyes, spontaneous and night sweating, irregular menstruation, abdominal pain, poor appetite, and fatigue. She was first treated with Renshen Jingjie San, then with Xiaoyao San until recovered. A third woman, due to anger, developed nodules, aversion to cold, and fever. I diagnosed Liver fire and treated her with Xiao Chaihu Tang added with Zhizi and Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) until cured. Later, she experienced bitter taste and hypochondriac pain, and dribbling urination; repeating the previous prescription led to full recovery. Another woman suffered from fever and nighttime delirium due to the aforementioned syndrome; this indicated heat in the blood aspect, treated with Xiao Chaihu Tang added with Shengdihuang until stabilized. Afterwards, heat subsided with Siwu Tang added with Chaihu, Zhizi, and Danpi (Moutan Bark), and full recovery was achieved with Xiaoyao San. A fourteen-year-old maiden, whose Tian Gui (menstrual fluid) had not yet arrived, developed red spots with itching and pain, and a wiry, rapid pulse at the left Guan position. This was due to Liver fire and blood heat, treated with Xiao Chaihu Tang added with Zhizi, Shengdihuang, and Mudanpi until cured. If caused by anger, the aforementioned prescriptions should be used.
