[Da] Profuse sweating due to deficiency that does not stop is caused by the deficiency of Yin Qi allowing Yang Qi to invade. This results in interior deficiency and exterior excess, where Yang Qi alone radiates outward, causing sweating. Blood belongs to Yin; childbirth injures blood, which constitutes a deficiency of Yin Qi. Qi belongs to Yang; when Qi is substantial, Yang adds to Yin, thereby inducing sweating. If Yin Qi is weak and fails to recover, sweating will persist indefinitely. Generally, after childbirth, both blood and Qi are deficient, leading to profuse sweating. If exposed to wind as a result, it may transform into Spasm (Jing). Even if spasm does not develop, there will be weakness, shortness of breath, emaciation, dry lips and mouth. Over time, menstruation may cease due to the exhaustion of Jin-Ye (body fluids).
[Xue's Commentary] The aforementioned syndrome belongs to deficiency of both blood and Qi. One should urgently use Shiquan Dabu Tang (Complete Great Tonifying Decoction); if ineffective, use Shenfu Tang (Ginseng and Aconite Decoction) or similar formulas. If excessive sweating leads to collapse of Yang and induces spasm, the aforementioned medicines are especially indicated. Mr. Wang Haizang stated: Sweating on the head stopping at the neck, with more sweat on the forehead, occurs because the forehead is the convergence point of the six Yang meridians, caused by steaming from deficiency-heat. I suggest that for the aforementioned syndrome, treatment should be differentiated by location: the left forehead corresponds to the Liver, the right forehead to the Lung, the nose to the Spleen, the chin (Yi) to the Kidney, and the central forehead to the Heart. Physicians should examine this carefully. A postpartum patient sweated profusely like water and became confused upon hearing any sound, vomiting all medicines taken orally. I attributed this to failure of Spleen Qi and prepared fine pills from Ginseng powder and Aconite powder. The patient held three to five pills in the mouth, swallowing them gradually with saliva, increasing the dose until reaching approximately one qian. Subsequently, Shenfu Tang was administered, resulting in recovery. Another postpartum patient suffered from persistent night sweats, leading to insomnia and extreme mental fatigue with dry mouth and thirst. I diagnosed this as blood deficiency with heat and prescribed Danggui Buxue Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Astragalus Decoction) to be taken as tea. Additionally, Danggui Liuhuang Tang (Angelica Sinensis and Six Huangs Decoction) was used, with Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) stir-fried until black, plus doubled doses of Ginseng and Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi). Recovery occurred after two doses.
[Da] In cases of sudden fainting, confusion, sweating, and loss of recognition after childbirth, treat using egg white and Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) methods, as detailed in the preceding section on Blood Stasis Fainting (Xue Yun).
[Xue's Commentary] The aforementioned syndrome indicates severe deficiency; the primary approach should be to consolidate Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Persistent sweating must inevitably transform into Rou Jing (Soft Spasm). Mr. Dongyuan stated: Women undergoing delivery or experiencing miscarriage with continuous bleeding may suffer from fainting and closed eyes because blood is suddenly lost while fire flares up. Supplementing the blood will naturally restore consciousness. For chronic bleeding, one should tonify and lift the Qi. When Yang Qi receives nourishment from blood, the spirit becomes tranquil and vision clears. I have now formulated a prescription to tonify the blood of the Hand and Foot Jueyin meridians while benefiting Yang Qi, named Quansheng Huoxue Tang (Life-Preserving Invigorating Blood Decoction).
Quansheng Huoxue Tang treats fever, spontaneous and night sweats, blurred vision, weakness in the four limbs, dry mouth, dizziness, and unsteady gait.
