Loving nursing (nursing with affection) may lead to salivation, wheezing, and the onset of wind-stroke (convulsions). (Sun Zhao stated: Nursing while angry causes infant Qi rebellion and mania; it also causes phlegm accumulation, wheezing, or fright.)
Angry nursing (nursing while the mother is angry) leads to hernia and abdominal distension. (*Qianjin Yi Fang* states: Angry nursing causes infant hernia. Bian Que stated: If the female [mother] is angry, it causes abdominal distension.)
Cold milk (nursing from a cold constitution or environment) results in undigested curds in stool. (*Shiji - Hua Tuo Lun* states: Cold and deficient Qi in milk causes green stools and crying. *Qianjin Yi Fang* states: It causes coughing.)
Hot milk (nursing from a hot constitution or diet) leads to yellowish complexion and anorexia. (*Qianjin Yi Fang* states: It causes vomiting. Zhang Shi stated: Hot milk damages Lung Qi, causing pigeon chest [pectus carinatum].)
Qi-stagnation milk (nursing when the mother's Qi is stagnant) leads to vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal distension. (*Youyou Xinshu* states: It causes a sallow-white complexion, reduced feeding, night crying, and milk stasis.)
Sick milk (nursing when the mother is ill) can generate various diseases. (It causes jaundice, emaciation, bone-steaming fever, night sweats, irritability, and night crying. Sun Shi stated: Sick milk leads to deficiency and wasting, and generates various diseases.)
Obstructed milk (nursing when milk flow is obstructed) leads to vomiting, regurgitation, and phlegm generation. (*Lingmi Danshu* states: Obstructed milk forms phlegm-saliva; excessive phlegm-saliva generates fright. *Youyou Xinshu* states: Obstructed milk forms milk masses [lactational mastitis/stasis], and causes vomiting, regurgitation, and phlegm generation.)
Urgent milk (nursing when the mother is rushed or stressed) leads to abdominal tension and coldness of the viscera. (*Youyou Xinshu* states: Abdominal tension with diarrhea, heat in the chest and back, night crying, emaciation, resembling accumulated masses.)
Intoxicated milk (nursing after maternal alcohol consumption) leads to mental confusion and frequent fright. (*Qianjin Yi Fang* states: It causes internal heat and urgent abdominal pain. Bian Que stated: The chaotic Qi from intoxication and lust enters via milk, causing infant mental confusion and frequent fright.)
Licentious milk (nursing after maternal sexual activity) inevitably triggers fright-epilepsy. (*Youyou Xinshu* states: Maternal licentiousness and chaotic desire during nursing cause infant vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and crow-like crying, which are difficult to treat.)
For all the above types of milk, if one rushes to nurse the infant, various diseases can arise; this must not be disregarded.
Whenever anger, joy, or other emotions are turbulent and unsettled before nursing, it results in vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, malnutrition [Gan syndrome], jaundice, and anorexia. When cold-heat pathogens are obstructed and stagnant, nursing results in phlegm-masses, saliva-cough, Lung distension, and pigeon chest.
Milk from intoxication, licentiousness, or panting/breathlessness often triggers fright-epilepsy. *Shenghui Fang* states: Milk from intoxication, licentiousness, or breathlessness can kill infants.
*Shengji Jing* discusses: Regarding nursing, summer milk should not be hot; heat causes vomiting and regurgitation. Winter milk should not be cold; cold causes dysentery. The mother should not be angry; anger causes infant Qi rebellion and mania. The mother should not be intoxicated; intoxication causes infant body heat and abdominal fullness. If the mother nurses immediately after vomiting or purging, it leads to infant deficiency and emaciation. If the mother has accumulated heat and nurses, it causes infant jaundice and inability to eat. If the mother nurses immediately after marital intercourse, it causes infant emaciation, frailty, and inability to walk due to weak calves.
Generally speaking, improper nursing and diet will generate diseases.
