Chao Yuanfang stated: When a child suffers from *Ke Wu* (Guest Intrusion), it is because the child's *Shen Qi* (Spiritual Energy) is weak. Suddenly encountering unusual objects or being touched by unfamiliar people causes these external factors to clash with the child's spiritual energy, leading to illness. This is called *Ke Wu*, also known as *Zhong Ke* (Struck by Guest) or *Zhong Ren* (Struck by Person). The symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, or white substances, separation of food and fluids, abdominal pain with body twisting and arching, facial color changes presenting five hues, and symptoms resembling epilepsy but without upward deviation of the eyes. The pulse is wiry, rapid, and hurried; this is *Ke Wu*. If treatment is delayed, it becomes difficult to cure later. If the wet nurse has drunk excessively, become intoxicated, or breastfeeds immediately after sexual intercourse while panting, the condition is most severe and can be fatal to the infant. (For cases with a hurried and rapid pulse, it is appropriate to use *Long Dan Tang* (Gentian Decoction) to purge, adding *Renshen* (Ginseng) and *Danggui* (Angelica Sinensis), in amounts equal to that of *Long Dan Cao* (Gentian Root).)
The *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) discusses why infants suffer from *Ke Wu*: it occurs when outsiders arrive, and their breath clashes with the infant. It is also called *Zhong Ren*. Even family members, whether from different rooms or households, including wet nurses and parents, if they return from outside carrying coarse, violent, or evil qi from places visited by spirits/gods, or odors from cattle, horses, etc., can cause such clashes. Breastfeeding while still panting from labor, where the milk qi is unsettled, also constitutes *Ke Wu*. Children's clothing, cotton, and padding must not contain human hair, nor should shoes contain hair. White clothes with green belts, or blue clothes with white belts, can all induce *Ke Wu*. Any unusual persons or objects entering from outside can startle the child and cause disease. To prevent this, when strangers or strange items enter the house, the child should be kept away and not allowed to see them. If avoidance is not possible, burning cow dung to maintain smoke at the doorway is beneficial. *Ke Wu* can occur at any time, yet why do all children fall ill in early autumn? Does every child suffer from *Ke Wu*? Infants have fewer illnesses in spring and winter but more in autumn and summer because during these seasons, the child's *Yang Qi* is on the exterior, and blood vessels are tender and weak. In late spring/early summer and early autumn, sudden cold snaps occur at dawn and dusk. The child's tender exterior is easily injured by this sudden cold, damaging the *Yang Qi*. Constrained *Yang Qi* leads to high fever, while cold stomach leads to dysentery. Thus, in late summer and early autumn, infants often present with high fever and dysentery, which are not necessarily all due to *Ke Wu*. Regarding the treatment of infants, in late summer and early autumn, one should observe if the weather turns cool or experiences sudden cold. Infants will likely develop high fever and dysentery. One must not use purgatives first; instead, one should first eliminate toxins/poisons, and then purge. For infants suffering from *Ke Wu*, urgently examine the area around the uvula in the mouth. There should be swollen, dark blue-black nodules like hemp seeds, colored red, white, or green. In such cases, quickly puncture with a needle to drain, or break with fingernails, and wipe away blood with cotton wrapped around a hairpin. Infant *Ke Wu* presents with vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, red, or white juices, abdominal pain, body twisting and lying on sides, panting resembling epilepsy, but without upward eye deviation and with less sleep. Facial colors change, and the pulse is wiry and rapid. If untreated for too long, it becomes difficult to cure. A prescription for this uses several *Dou Chi* (Fermented Soybean Pills), moistened with water, pounded until soft, and formed into pills the size of a chicken egg. Rub these pills on the infant's fontanelle and soles of the feet five to six times each. Then rub the pill over the heart and above/below the navel in circular motions. After a meal interval, cut open the pill; fine hairs should be found inside. Throw the pill into the road, and the pain will cease.
*Zhen Zhu San* (Pearl Powder): Treats *Ke Wu*, *Jing Feng* (Wind of Shock), *Gui Zhu* (Ghost Tethering), pathogenic shock phlegm-heat, restless mind, unstable spirit, constant palpitations, night terrors, teeth grinding, heat in the five centers, sweating with panting, red face with white tongue, yawning with irritability and thirst, red scanty urine, or vomiting/diarrhea of yellow froth. Regular use expels evil and calms the spirit.
Ingredients: *Zhen Zhu* (Pearl), *Hai Piao Xiao* (Cuttlefish Bone), *Hua Shi* (Talcum), each 1 qian; *Bai Fu Ling* (Poria), *Renshen* (Ginseng), *Bai Fu Zi* (Aconitum Carlemanii Radix), *Gan Cao* (Licorice Root, honey-fried), *Quan Xie* (Scorpion), *She Xiang* (Musk), *Nao Zi* (Camphor, separately ground), each 5 qian; *Sheng Zhu* (Raw Pearl, separately ground), 1 qian; *Jin Bo* (Gold Leaf), 30 pieces; *Yin Bo* (Silver Leaf), 20 pieces.
Preparation: Grind all ingredients into fine powder and mix evenly. Take 0.5 qian, decoct *Deng Xin Cao* (Juncus Effusus) and *Mai Dong* (Ophiopogon Japonicus Rhizome), add a little honey, and take orally. Administer once at noon and once before bed.
*Tan Shi Shu Sheng* Prescription for *Ke Wu*:
Suddenly crying incessantly, whole body high fever, pulse like a hook, startled crying blaming spirits/gods, *Ke Wu* hurting the heart, unable to control oneself. Pound together *Xi Jiao* (Rhinoceros Horn) and *Xiong Huang* (Realgar). Decoct *Tao Fu* (Peach Wood Talisman) water to desired consistency. Add *Renshen* (Ginseng), *Fu Ling* (Poria), and *Che Qian Zi* (Plantago Seed). Form pills; taking three doses brings no worry.
*An Shen Wan* (Calming Spirit Pill):
*Sheng Xi* (Raw Rhinoceros Horn) powder, 0.5 qian; *Xiong Huang* (Realgar), ground; *Renshen* (Ginseng), *Fu Ling* (Poria), *Che Qian Zi* (Plantago Seed), each 1 fen.
Preparation: Grind into powder. Take 1 liang of *Tao Bai Pi* (Peach Bark) and 1 liang of *Tao Fu* (Peach Wood Talisman). Decoct in 3 sheng of water until 1 sheng remains. Strain, then reduce to a paste. Mix with the powder to form pills the size of sesame seeds. Take 3 pills per dose, washed down with *Shao Yao Tang* (Peony Decoction).
Another Formula:
Infant choking qi pounding the heart continuously, panting with much sorrow and gastric saliva, only this disease should be treated early, because *Ke Wu* qi is frying/consuming. Looking at the symptoms, medical efficacy is hard to achieve. Quickly take 0.5 qian of *Zhen Zhu San* (Pearl Powder), containing *Long Nao* (Borneol), *Sheng Xi* (Raw Rhinoceros Horn), and *Xiang Fu Zi* (Cyperus Rotundus). After the infant ingests it, safety is guaranteed.
*Zhen Zhu San* (Pearl Powder): *Zhen Zhu Mo* (Pearl Powder), 4 qian; *Sheng Xi Mo* (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Powder), 2 qian; *Xiang Fu Zi Mo* (Cyperus Rotundus Powder), 1 qian; *Long Nao* (Borneol), half zi.
Preparation: Grind together. Take one zi per dose, mixed with *Tao Ren Tang* (Apricot Kernel Decoction). The wet nurse must avoid raw, cold, greasy foods and all toxic substances for half a month.
[Zhang Huan] *Pi Xie Gao* (Evil-Expelling Ointment): Infants' blood and qi are not yet solid, and their spiritual energy is weak. Except for routine care by parents and wet nurses, do not let the child see strangers, nor carry them to other rooms/households, nor let them see cattle, horses, or beasts. Parents or family members returning from outside, even late at night, should not be seen by the child, lest they carry coarse, violent qi from places visited by spirits/gods. If this qi invades the child, it causes vomiting and diarrhea of green, yellow, red, or white substances, separation of food and fluids, symptoms resembling epilepsy but without upward eye deviation or wiry-rapid pulse. This is named *Ke Wu*. (Weaned infants may also suffer sudden *Zhong E* (Struck by Evil); this medicine is suitable and can restore consciousness immediately.)
Ingredients: *Jiang Zhen Xiang* (Aquilaria Agallocha Resin), *Bai Jiao Xiang* (Liquidambar Resin), *Chen Xiang* (Agarwood), *Hu Tou Gu* (Tiger Skull Bone, lightly fried), *Gui Jiu* (Podophyllum Hexandrum Root), *Cao Long Dan* (Gentiana Scabra Root), *Renshen* (Ginseng), *Bai Fu Ling* (Poria).
Preparation: Each ingredient (half liang) is pounded and sifted into fine powder. Add half liang of *Xiong Huang* (Realgar) ground with water and floated (water-floating method). Grind 1 qian of *She Xiang* (Musk). Mix all uniformly. Blend with refined honey to form pills the size of a chicken head. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in *Ru Xiang Tang* (Frankincense Decoction). Additionally, make pills the size of a bullet, store in a green silk bag, and attach to the child's clothing. Burn incense regularly in the sleeping area.
[Tian] For *Ke Wu* causing shock/clashing: Use two liang of finely ground loam soil from the stove. Mix with one shelled egg and a little water. First bathe the child in peach and willow branch decoction, then apply this mixture to the five centers (palms, soles, chest) and the top of the head. (Chen Wuyue's method uses equal parts loam soil and earthworm feces applied similarly.)
For sudden *Ke Wu* with trismus and inability to speak: Equal parts *Xi Xin* (Asarum) and *Gui Xin* (Cinnamon Twig Heart), placed in the mouth. Effective.
*Yuan He Ji Yong Jing* treats infant *Ke Wu*: Crush *Chang Pu* (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome) juice and place in the mouth. Or use fresh *Ai Ye* (Mugwort Leaf) juice in the mouth. Or use 3-4 drops of knife-sharpening water; this is excellent. Or grind good ink, sieve it, mix with warm water, and take half a qian-bi.
