Chao Yuanfang stated: People gather various snakes and insects together, place them in vessels, and allow them to devour each other. The one remaining is named "Gu" (a venomous insect created by mutual cannibalism). It can transform its form and may enter the human abdomen through food or drink, consuming the five zang organs. Children who contract Gu exhibit symptoms identical to adults, including stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, restlessness, and mental anguish. In acute cases, death occurs immediately; in chronic cases, it persists for years, leading to gradual emaciation and debility until the heart is consumed, bloody stools are passed, and the heart rots, resulting in death. After death, the pathogenic factor transmits to others, hence it is called "Gu Zhu" (infectious Gu disease).
