Pediatric patients aged one to ten years should not wear new cotton wadding (new cotton) in their clothing, nor should their clothes and bedding be dried over fire during winter. They should not consume fruits such as peaches, apricots, yangmei (Chinese bayberry), nor foods like roasted or fried hot wheat noodles, as these will cause heat in the child's body. Some cases of internal heat arise from eating meat too early after a Shanghan (Cold Damage) illness; some may develop into Guzheng (Bone-steaming fever, a chronic consumptive disease characterized by yin deficiency and internal heat). It is appropriate to treat them with Shengxi San (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Powder), Ke Xiao Tang (Ke Xiao Decoction), Digupi Yin (Digupi Decoction), Qibao San (Seven Treasures Powder), and Jinlian Yinzi (Jinlian Drink).
[From Zeng] Guzhen fever presents with a weak and emaciated body, onset in the evening, fever without chills, and cessation only after waking up with thirst and sweating. This is the residual toxin of Gan disease (infantile malnutrition syndrome caused by spleen-stomach dysfunction), which transmits to become Guzhen. There may also be Pi masses (abdominal masses) inside the abdomen with occasional mild pain. Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) or Jiang Zao Sanleng Decoction can be used to regulate the condition. Alternatively, Huapi Wan (Pi-Mass Resolving Pill) can be administered first to treat spleen deficiency and retained stagnation, followed by treatment with Chaihu Yin (Bupleurum Decoction). One must still avoid toxic foods such as chicken, alcohol, mutton, and wheat noodles.
Renshen Shengxi San: Treats pediatric Guzhen with muscle wasting, flushed cheeks, dry mouth, tidal fever in the late afternoon (Ribu Chaore), night sweats, five-palm heat irritability (Wuxin Fanzao), and limb fatigue.
