According to *Han Shi Yi Tong* (Han's Medical Insights): A nobleman had a nasal polyp (nasal growth) that emitted an unbearable stench and was extremely painful upon touch, seemingly leaving him helpless and awaiting death. I merely applied powder of Alum (Bai Fan) mixed with a small amount of Arsenic (Pi Shuang), blown into the lesion. Within moments, the growth liquefied and disappeared. He was further cured after taking two doses of Sheng Shi Tang (Dampness-Overcoming Decoction) combined with Xie Bai San (Lung-Draining Powder). This condition arises from damp-heat steaming in the lung orifice due to rich dietary intake, similar to mushrooms sprouting suddenly on ground after rain. If Lung Qi is deficient and obstructed, leading to nasal polyps and loss of smell, Yang Fei San (Sheep Lung Powder) should be used. If there are food stagnation and phlegm-heat flowing in the stomach, internal administration of Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Ban Xia), Arisaematis Rhizoma (Tian Nan Xing), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cang Zhu), Scutellariae Radix prepared with wine (Jiu Huang Qin), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huang Lian), Massae Medicatae Fermentatae (Shen Qu), Magnoliae Flos (Xin Yi), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xi Xin), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Bai Zhi), and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) to resolve phlegm and stagnation is appropriate. For external use, mix 2 qian of Hu Die Fan (Butterfly Alum), 1 qian of Xi Xin, and 0.5 qian of Bai Zhi into powder, wrap in cotton, insert into the nose, and change frequently. Xin Yi Gao (Magnolia Ointment), Qing Huang San, Huang Bai San, Er Ding San, Gua Ding San, and Di Long San are all external treatments.
Internal formulas include Wu Xi Wan (Black Rhinoceros Horn Pill), Gan Lu Yin (Sweet Dew Drink), and Huang Lian E Jiao Wan (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill). External treatments include: Di Huang Jian (Rehmannia Decoction); Xin Yi Gao; juice of Almond (Xing Ren) applied topically; cow earwax applied topically; powder of Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen), and Arecae Semen (Bing Lang) mixed with lard for application; powder of Indigo Naturalis (Qing Dai), Sophorae Flos (Huai Hua), and Almond (Xing Ren) applied topically.
Chun Gen Tang (Toona Decoction), Wu Xiang San, and Indigo Naturalis (Lan Dian) applied broadly over the area, ten times daily and four times at night, leads to immediate recovery.
Xi Jiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder), Sang Gen Bai Pi San (Mulberry Root Bark Powder), and Chui Bi San (Nose-Blowing Powder).
Pain results from obstruction of the airway; internally administer Ren Shen Shun Qi San (Ginseng Qi-Pacifying Powder) and externally apply Bai Zhi San. When wind-cold combats the Lung organ and attacks upward to the nose, it causes nasal pain; treat with Mo Yao San (Myrrh Powder). If the Lung is invaded by wind, presenting with withered pale complexion, occasional redness of cheeks, dry skin, nasal congestion with dry pain, this is deficiency-wind; treat with Bai Xian Pi Tang (Dictamni Cortex Decoction). For nasal congestion, blurred vision, pain, and cerebral stuffiness, use Hu Lu Jiu (Gourd Wine). If food suddenly retreats from the nose into the brain causing persistent pain, insert a piece of beef tallow or mutton fat, size of a finger tip, into the nose. Inhale through the nose to draw the fat in; once the fat melts, the foreign object will exit along with it.
Another condition is called Jiu Za Bi (Alcohol-induced Nasal Acne), caused by blood-heat entering the Lung. Lung Qi connects to the nose, serving as the pathway for clear Qi. In those who drink excessively, pathogenic heat steams the lung lobes, lingering and not dispersing, thus manifesting on the nose. Alternatively, if one has pre-existing wind-heat in the lungs, even without drinking alcohol, the nose may become red, termed Jiu Za Bi, which is a common name. It is suitable to consume Zhe Er Jiang (a herb) alone, chilled and drunk after meals. Or, take Loquat Leaf (Pi Pa Ye), remove hairs, do not honey-fry, chop finely, decoct into a strong liquid, cool it, and mix with Xiao Feng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) to take after meals and before bed. One may also take Sheng Ma Fang Feng San (Cimicifugae and Saposhnikoviae Powder) or Xie Qing Wan (Drain-Blue Pill). Secret recipe: Equal parts of Loquat Leaf (hair removed), Gardeniae Fructus (Da Shan Zhi), Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Ku Shen), and Atractylodis Rhizoma (soaked in rice water and stir-fried) are powdered. Take 1.5 qian per dose, mixed with wine, swallowed with plain boiled water. Taking it in the evening clears redness on the right side; taking it in the morning clears redness on the left side. The effect is miraculous. Externally, roast Sulfur (Liu Huang) inside a large turnip, grind, and apply. Or, grind raw Alum (Sheng Bai Fan), place in palm with a drop of wine during face washing, rub the affected area, and whiten within days. Or, rub regularly with white salt. Or, apply cow or horse earwax mixed with water. Or, apply raw Pinelliae Rhizoma (Sheng Ban Xia) powder mixed with water. Or, apply Indigo Naturalis, Sophorae Flos, and Almond powder. Or, apply Almond alone ground with milk. Or, use 1 liang of Sulfur, 1 qian of White Fruit (Bai Guo) ash, 3 fen of Amber (Hu Po), 5 fen of Calomelas (Qing Fen), and 5 fen of Alum, each powdered. Place these medicines in a wine pot containing one bowl of distilled liquor, seal tightly, suspend the pot in a larger vessel filled with hot water, and simmer slowly for 1-2 hours. Remove and cool. Apply with liquor during the day, and apply the settled powder at night.
